A. Preparatory Activities
The 220 words are mimeographed separately in two parts on the two sides of the paper.
In Part I, words are arranged in four columns, for words in each horizontal line and numbered 1
to 27. There are four trials for each part.
B. Test Proper
The Group Auditory-Visual Test
1. Give one mimeographed copy to each child. After filling in the needed information,
give the direction for the test.
2. Start the test. Proceed with number 2. Follow reading the words in succession for
each number as found in the scoring key.
3. Continue with Part II on the other side of the paper. See that each pupil turns the
paper for this part of the test. Follow the same procedure in Part I.
4. Continue with the second, third and fourth trials using the same sheet. The scoring

in the first language.
Summary and Recommendation
A pupil with a poor or very limited sight vocabulary is greatly handicapped in reading. The
Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary of 220 words constitutes 50 to 75 percent of all school reading
matter. Its mastery is essential. It is recommended that:
1. Remedial reading teachers administer the tests to newly referred pupils to determine their
basic reading difficulties.
2. Remedial reading teachers administer the same tests to pupils ready for release of assessment
for progress in sight word recognition.
3. Remedial reading teachers make comparative studies on sight word recognition and on
improved skills in oral and silent reading.
