Evidence 3 2

This lesson plan aims to teach 5th grade students to identify rules and formulas in patterns involving multiplication and division. Students will look for patterns in addition and subtraction problems. They will analyze geometric patterns involving tables and chairs and write number sentences to represent rules they find. The lesson involves group discussion, independent work, and formative and summative assessment of student workbooks.

Determining Rules from Geometric and Number Patterns

Lesson Plan Two

Key Learning Area: Numeracy

Grade: Five

Aim: The aim of this lesson is for students to

identify rules in everyday situations to describe
relationships that involve multiplication or
division.

Curriculum Links:

Date:

Describe, continue and create patterns with

fractions, decimals and whole numbers
resulting from addition and
subtraction (ACMNA107)

Learning Objectives: On completion of this

lesson, students will be able to:
Identify patterns that can possibly be
found in addition and subtraction
problems.

Resources/Preparation
Go Maths page 26

Groups

There will be a group discussion at the

beginning of the lesson with the remainder
of the lesson to be completed
independently.

Learning Activities/Procedure
Introductory activities.
Recap on yesterdays lesson have students share with their table 2
things that they think patterns are important in numeracy.
Discuss as a class the importance of rules and formulas in
numeracy. What do they help us achieve? Do they help us to work
out a problem?
Discuss the different ways that patterns can help us.
Developmental activities
Draw an example of a square table with 4 chairs around it on the
board. Invite students to tell you how many chairs there will be if
there are 1, 2 or 3 tables.
Draw a table on the board to show the results.
Next ask students how many chairs would there be if there are 6
tables? This will help students understand that the pattern is the
number of chairs (4) x the number of tables.
Have the students work from page 26 of their Go Maths books.
Make sure that the students are not only looking for patterns
horizontally but vertically as well.
Encourage the students to draw a picture of the problem as it may
help them.
Conclusion activities
Discuss the different patterns found throughout the activity. Did this
help you find answers? Why? Why not?
Assessment

This lesson will be formatively assessed throughout the lesson by

using inquiry questions as well as giving students feedback to aid

Notes

their understanding.
Summative assessment will be used at the end of the lesson by
collecting the students Go Maths books. This will indicate if the
lesson was successful in for filling the learning outcomes.

Determining Rules from Geometric and Number Patterns

Lesson Plan Four
Key Learning Area: Numeracy

Grade: Five

Aim: The aim of this lesson is for students to use

number sentences to summarise rules they have
written in words.

Date:

Describe, continue and create patterns with

fractions, decimals and whole numbers
resulting from addition and
subtraction (ACMNA107)

Learning Objectives: On completion of this

lesson, students will be able to:
Write an equation to represent the rules of the
patterns they have found.

Groups

There will be a group discussion at the

beginning of the lesson with the remainder
of the lesson to be completed
independently.

Learning Activities/Procedure
Introductory activities.
Discuss the different times in the real world where they may have
used an how did it help
Developmental activities
No explicit teaching will be needed for this lesson as the majority of
the students have completed page 28 and 29 of the Go Maths books
which completes the unit.
Once students have made sure that all activities from this weeks
unit are finished they are to continue working with their unfinished
mathletics tasks.
Conclusion activities
Discuss the different patterns found throughout the activity. Did this
help you find answers? Why? Why not?
