ADVERBS AND ADVERBIAL PHRASES

according to

used to introduce an idea which is supported by


a person, people, research or statistics.
Always followed by a noun and a comma

eg According to doctors, babies born today will live to be over 100 years old
although

used to contrast 2 clauses.


Place a comma between the 2 clauses

eg Although she was ill, she went to work


She went to work, although she was ill
however

used to add a comment to a previous sentence


(often introducing contrast)

eg It was beautiful today in the park. However, tomorrow will be very different
in case

= there is a possibility that

eg Im taking my phone in case my car breaks down


in fact

used to emphasise that something is true or to add


more detailed information

eg Im feeling very tired, in fact Im exhausted


The traffic is getting worse. In fact, I think Im going to turn around and
drive home.
instead (of)

= in place of someone/something

eg I going to work tomorrow instead of Friday because I need to take Friday off

My sister bought me purple socks instead of grey !


since

= because

.
eg Since you cant see me this afternoon, youll have to wait till Thursday now
(as because)

whereas

used to contrast and compare 2 facts or opinions.


Joins 2 clauses. Not usually used at the start of a
sentence

eg I love going to the gym, whereas my sister hates it


My children live very far away whereas yours live nearby
