DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
1.Read these sentences. Decide which ones dont need WHO, WHICH or THAT and
cross it out.

2. Join each pair of sentences by means of a defining relative- clause. Put the
pronoun in brackets if it is the object.
1.Thats the ladder. Paul fell off it yesterday.
2. Theres the hotel. We stayed there last month.
3. I am wearing the bracelet. You bought it to me for my birthday.
4. Ive met a man. His brother is a famous actor.
5. The hotel has been rebuilt. It burnt down last spring.

NON- DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
3. Join each pair of sentences by means of a non-defining relative clause.
1. Ipods are still expensive. They are becoming very popular.
2. In the nineteenth century people worked hard. Victoria was Queen of England then.
3. Fruit and vegetables are good for your skin. They contain lots of vitamins.
4. Our neighbours throw stones at our dog. They dont like animals.
5. My friend Louise is exactly the same height as me. I have borrowed her dress.
6. The Natural History Museum in London is a good place to take children. There is a
model dinosaur there.
7. My grandfather was only 1.90 metres tall. He lived to be ninety-nine.
8. Janes school will be knocked down in December. It is 100 years old.

4. Complete the text by writing one word in each gap
I went out yesterday with my fianc Mark. Hes the man .. Im
going to marry next year. We went to a town . is called Hilltown, not far from
where we live. The first shop .. we went to was the place .. they make
special jewellery. We want to find a wedding ring. is very unusual. Id like a ring
made out of Welsh gold, but the man owns that particular shop said he didnt
have any rings like that. He told us he has a colleague .. daughter has got a
Welsh gold ring and he said he would find out where she got it from and let us know. After we
had done a bit of shopping, we went to visit Marks grandmother, .. lives near
Hilltown. Her flat, is small but very nice, is next to the park
Mark and I first met, so its always nice to go there. At half past eight, . we
realized how late it was, we said goodbye to Marks grandmother and left for home. We
stopped for a pizza at the caf is owned by Marks cousin, and when we
arrived home at ten oclock, Marks mum, . had prepared a meal for us, said she had
been wondering where we were!
