BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB

This document summarizes the calculation of a BEF (Bus Earth Fault) relay setting for a substation. It provides the key parameters used, such as the transformer capacity, cable length and size, CT ratios. It then shows the step-by-step calculations to determine the operating current, impedances of the CT and cable, and whether a metrosil is required to limit the fault voltage below 3000V.

BEF Calculation

Details :
TF capacity 2 MVA TF Primary voltage 22000 V
Rct 0.9 Ω TF Secondary voltage 433 V
Ie 100 mA % Impedance 6.15 %
Vk 80 V No of CT's used 3
Length of cable 4 m Relay resistance, RR 0.3 Ω
Size of cable 4 sqmm IL = 52.4879278 A
CT ratio Pri 75 sec 1 A
N 75
Assumed Ie at Vs 0.03 A
Calculation
RL = r l where r is 17.2 x 10-9 ohm / m
A
= 0.0172 Ω
2RL = 0.0344 Ω

If = 853.4622403 A
or 11.37949654 A refer to CT secondary current
Vk of saturation CT with Transducer ::9 Volts 9 volts
Secondary thru fault current : Pri. Thru' fault cur. = 853.462 A
CT 75
= 11.3795 A
Therefore impedance of Saturation CT @ thru' fault current, Rsat = 9

11.3795
= 0.7909 Ω
Vs = If ( Rct + 2RL + RR + RSAT )
23.04685053 V

Check if Vk >= 2Vs

Vk = 3.47119
Vs

Operating current Is, set at 50% of full load current 0.5 X 52.48792778 = 26.244 A
Is = (( 0.5 X IL)/N) - nIe
= 0.259919519 A

RST = Vs
Is
= 88.66917982 Ω

Check whether a metrosil is required,

Assumed Maximum internal fault current of Ifmax is 6KA
Vf = Ifmax ( RCT + 2RL + RR + RSAT + RST )
= 7255.55808 V

Vp = 2 X sqrt (2 X 2 Vk X ( Vf -Vk ))
2142.97857 V
Since it is < 3000V , thus a metrosil is not required.
