Chapter 4

The document discusses the software and steps used to design and simulate a small chip antenna. HFSS is used to simulate the antenna's performance. Key steps include selecting a substrate, cutting it to shape, and etching holes on the top and bottom layers. The final simulated results show the return loss is -29dB at 2.4GHz and -20dB at 5.8GHz, demonstrating the antenna can operate at dual frequencies.

DESIGN AND SIMULATION OF

SMALL CHIP ANTENNA

Software used for the simulation of small chip antenna is HFSS High Frequency Simulator
Structure; HFSS is a high performance full wave electromagnetic (EM) field simulator for
arbitrary 3D volumetric passive device modelling that takes advantage of the familiar Microsoft
Windows graphical user interface. It integrates simulation, visualization, solid modelling, and
automation in an easy to learn environment where solutions to your 3D EM problems are quickly
and accurate obtained.
HFSS can be used to calculate parameters such as S-Parameters, Resonant Frequency, and
Fields. Typical uses include:
Main Steps for Designing and Simulation
HFSS has a 3-dimentional view as shown in Figure 4.1, for detail see the appendix A.

Select the substrate of same dimensions and thickness; as shown in figure 4.2

Simulated Result through HFSS

Final simulated result shows the return loss verses frequency, for 2.4 GHz the return loss is -
29dB and for 5.8 GHz, it is about -20 GHz.

The above simulated result shows that Small Chip Antenna can work on dual frequency 2.4GHz
and 5.8GHz.
