Capacitor Inrush Current Calculation

This document derives formulas for calculating capacitor inrush current when energizing an isolated bank. It shows that the maximum inrush current (IMAX) is proportional to the reactive power (KVAR) of the capacitors and inversely proportional to the system inductance (LS). The final formulas provided are IMAX ≅ 1330 * (KVAR/LS) for 60 Hz systems and IMAX ≅ 1456.7 * (KVAR/LS) for 50 Hz systems. These allow calculating the peak inrush current based on the capacitive reactive power and system inductance.

Capacitor Inrush Current Calculations

This shows the derivation of the inrush calculations from IEEEC37.99.

Energizing A Isolated Bank:

CB
IMAX = 2 ∗ V LG (1)
LS

CB is the bank capacitance in microfarads

LS is the system inductance in microhenries.

V 2 ∗ 2Π F ∗ C ∗ 10 −6
As stated KVAR = from (16)
1000
KVAR ∗ 10 9
ˆ CB = 2 (2)
V ∗ (2Π F )

Then Substitute CB from (20) with formula (21) we get

 KVAR ∗ 10 9 

IMAX = 2 ∗V L −G
(
 2
)
 V ∗ (2Π F )  (3)
LS

Peak to Peak

10 9 . 31,622.8
(
 KVAR ∗ 10 9
 ) 
IMAX = 2 ∗ V L −G
(
 V 2 ∗ (2Π F )
∗  L−L
) (4)
LS

(2ΠF ) ≈ 19.4163@60Hz
17.7245@50Hz

1
Then

 KVAR 
 
2 ∗ VL −G ∗ 31,622.8  V2 
IMAX = ∗ (5)
19.4163 LS

(
LET = VL −G ∗ 3 )
2

This will allow us to re-arrange (5) to the following

2 ∗ VL −G ∗ 31,622.8 KVAR
IMAX = ∗ (6)
3 ∗ VL −G ∗ 19.4163 LS

≅ ((0.81649658) ∗ (1628.673)) ∗
KVAR
(7)
LS

Giving us the following inrush formulas

KVAR
≅ 1330 For 60 Hz (8)
LS

KVAR
≅ 1456.7 For 50 Hz (9)
LS
