Tutorial: Quick Grass by Bernard Peh

This tutorial shows how to quickly create grass in 3D Studio Max within 5 minutes. The method involves drawing a plane as the ground, a tapered cylinder as individual grass blades, and using the scatter function to duplicate and randomly distribute the grass blades across the ground plane. Materials are then applied, with a green diffuse color for the grass. Rendering the scene produces a basic grass effect with minimal effort. The tutorial concludes by inviting feedback to improve clarity.

Tutorial: Quick Grass By Bernard Peh

Introduction Like many others, this is just another grass tutorial made in 3D Studio Max. The approach that I used here is abit different and should be faster. If you know Studio Max well enough which i hope you do, you should be able to make grass within 5 mins by following the method shown in this tutorial. The parameters used here are what I tried and recommend (feel free to change them to what you are comfortable with). For parameters not mentioned, you can leave their values as default. Method 1. In Top viewport, Draw a plane (Length = 200, width = 300, length seg = 16, width seg = 16), name it "ground". 2. In Top viewport, Draw a cylinder (Radius = 10, Height = 50, Height seg = 3, Cap seg = 1, sides = 18, smooth on), name it "grass". 3. Select cylinder, under Modify/Taper, amount = 2, curve = -2 (You will have get a concave cylinder).

4. Under Create/Compound obects/Scatter, pick distribution object = "ground". Duplicate = 500, vertex chaos = 5%, check random faces. 5. Under Material, assign any material to the plane (ground). For grass, under shader basic params, choose blinn, turn wire on, diffuse color = green.

. 6. Adjust your perspective view. Render.

Conclusion So, is everything fast and easy? If you have any comments or questions, feel free to email me. Thats it for now, hope that the tutorial is clear enough. Cheers.
