Question 1 - : Compound Channel

This document provides information about a compound channel and calculations related to discharge, energy coefficients, specific energy, and flow in pipes. It includes: - A diagram of a compound channel with main and flood channels of different widths and side slopes, along with Manning's n values. - Calculations to determine the discharge for a flood level of 4.5m and the energy coefficient. - A diagram showing changes in specific energy for different depths in a rectangular channel. - Calculations for pressure drop in an oil pipeline and discharge in a water pipeline using the Colebrook-White formula.

QUESTION 1 COMPOUND CHANNEL Below is atypical example of a compound channel designed for flooding. The main channel has a base width of 6m and side slopes of 1:2 whiles that of the flood channels are 9m wide and side slopes of 1:3. The mannings n for the main channel is 0.025 and that of the flood channels are 0.035. Assume the gradients (slopes) are 0.0015. 4.5m

QUESTION 3 FLOW IN PIPES & CLOSED CONDUITS ENERGY

i.

Oil flows through a 32mm diameter pipe with a mean velocity of 0.4m/s. Given that = 4.8 x 10-2 kg/ms and = 850 kg/m3. Calculate the pressure drop in a 45m length. SOLUTION

ii. A pipeline 15,000m long 375mm diameter and with roughness size of 0.03mm, conveys water from a reservoir (top water level 820m above datum) to a water treatment plant (inlet water level 650m above datum). Assuming that the reservoir remains full, estimate the discharge using the Colebrook-White Formula. Note: Assume =1.13x10-6 m2/s SOLUTION
