The Cause and Effect Essay DEFINITION What is a cause and effect essay?

Cause and effect essays are concerned with why things happen (causes) and what happens as a result (effects). To determine causes: "Why did this happen?" To identify effects: "What happened because of this?"

PURPOSE Cause and effect is a common method of organizing and discussing ideas.

Cause-and-effect writing gives reasons and explanations for events, conditions, or behavior. It informs and educates. It can be speculative (informative or entertaining or both). Decide if your are writing to inform, entertain or persuade.

STRATEGIES Begin by listing the event or condition you want to address. Develop your thesis statement. State clearly whether you are discussing causes, effects, or both. 2. Cause/Effect compositions are not necessarily to be about both causes and effects. It is advisable to focus on writing about either the causes or the effects, not both.

3. Find and organize supporting details. Back up your thesis with relevant and sufficient details that are organized. You can organize details in the following ways: Chronological: details are arranged in the order in which the events occurred. Order of importance: details are arranged from least to most important or vice versa. Categorical: details are arranged by dividing the topic into parts or categories.
