Basic Circuit Design and PCB Layout: 5 Volt Regulated Power Supply

The document provides information about designing a 5 volt regulated power supply circuit and PCB layout. It outlines the project workflow, including stating the problem of designing a 5V regulated power supply with 220V AC input and 5V DC output. It then discusses testing the circuit diagram on a breadboard before moving to the final PCB layout. It also provides information about common circuit components used such as transformers, capacitors, LEDs, and their specifications.

Creating Circuit Diagram

Test your components on breadboard first

Circuit
Know your components absolute maximum ratings from their respective datasheets

On next slide we are going to learn some basic components and specs used frequently in design of electronic circuits

Before going to market you need to know the exact voltage and current ratings according to your problem statement
Finally test you circuit diagram on Breadboard

COMPONENTS

Input Voltage : 230 Volt AC

Ouput Voltage: Rated AC Voltage

Type of Transformers In market : 1. Center-Tap Rating Example : 12-0-12 18-0-18 9-0-9 1. Two Wire Output Voltage Rating

COMPONENTS

Specifications according to Datasheet for LM78XX series: Input Voltage : 26 V DC to 46V depending on the manufacturer (Check datasheet for your IC) Output Voltage :

LM 7805 : 5 V DC
LM 7809 : 9 V DC LM 7812 : 12 V DC LM 7815 : 15 V DC

Type of capacitors :

COMPONENTS

1. Electrolytic Capacitors Polarized High capacitance values Value > 1 uF 2. Ceramic Capacitors Unpolarized Low Capacitance Values Value < 1 uF Capacitors have a Voltage Rating as well. Use : To sink AC Ripple(noise) present in DC voltage. To Stabalize power fluctuations as it stores charge.

LED

Specification of common LED: Max Current Rating : 30 mA Safe Current Rating (increased life): 5-10 mA Voltage Rating : No voltage Rating. Only current needs to be limited by resistor in series. Polar Device : Longer LEG : Anode Shorter LEG : Cathode
