Basic Information
Physical impairment refers to a broad range of disabilities which include orthopedic, neuromuscular, cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders. The physical disability may either be congenital or a result of injury, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, amputation, heart disease, pulmonary disease or more. Some people have hidden (nonvisible) disabilities which include pulmonary disease,

Considerations

Although the cause of the disability may vary, persons with physical disabilities may face the following difficulties:

Access Issues:
Inability to gain access to inaccessible building or room. Decreased eye-hand coordination. Impaired verbal communication. Decreased physical stamina and endurance.

For specially aided students, self-image is extremely important. Peers can be cruel to such child with physical handicaps and become involved in teasing, casting insulting remarks and excluding physically handicapped children from games and group type activities. Teachers need to ensure that the child's self image is positive.

Physically handicapped students are aware of the fact that they are physically different than most others and that there are certain things they cannot do. These children want to succeed and participate as much as they can and this needs to be encouraged and fostered by the people like us. The focus needs to be on what the child CAN do - not can't do.

Strategies that MAY help:


Find out what their strengths are and capitalize on them. Let theses children also taste the sweetness of success ! Stop those which makes rude remarks, name calling or teasing to this section of society. Such people need to be taught about disabilities to develop respect and acceptance.

Compliment them time to time for various reasons. Make adjustments and accommodations whenever possible to enable such people to participate. Never pity the handicapped person, they do not want your pity.
