Internship Project

Urban Ladder

Internship
At the combination of our third year of education at NIFT, each student is expected work as a summer internee at a design based institution of choice. The objective of this college requirement is for the student to gain proper industry exposure and to experience commercial design. We are given a brief of what is expected from us and of what is expected from company. Thus the main objective of the activity is exposure into the design field.

The Intern
After the completion of 6th semester of the course. I took the role of intern at urban ladder. I am student with primary interest in the area of furniture but in my internship I got to know much more about furniture as well as interior design. This new learning has provided a new vision for furniture and one of indepth exposure into one of the many vast fields which from commercial design.

Industrys Profile
Incorporated and emerged as largest publicly traded furniture and home decor sources. Urban Ladder is an importer and manufacturer of residential wood, metal and upholstered furniture based in Bangaluru, Karnataka. Major Wood furniture categories include home entertainment, home office, accent, dining and bedroom furniture in the upper medium price points sold under the Urban Ladder brand, and sold at moderate price points under the. Urban Ladder mainly consist of following: 1.Furniture 2.Lifestyle Style Accessories 3.Ineriors

Manufacturing Unit
Urban Ladder manufacturing industry in Jodhpur has grown significantly only in the last decade. Before that, the Jodhpuri furniture industry was dominated by the exportation of raw and semi processed Urban Ladder materials to other furniture manufacturing units. General development attributes and advantages The main development attributes of the technology are as follows: 1.Creates a large number of income generation opportunities 2.Increases community welfare 3.The furniture is durable, light and popular 4.The unit can easily be adapted to the production of a wide range of different designs 5.The same sub-assemblies can be used for a number of different products

Target groups There are two main target groups. The first are those who will be employed in the unit. The unit will require unskilled, semi-skilled, technically trained and management personnel and many of these people can be recruited from the local villages. The female workers may be allowed to dominate the least arduous tasks like sanding, scrapping and packaging, leaving other laborious jobs to the male workers. Benefits The unit will create employment and income generating opportunities for a wide range of people and will improve the economies of the rural communities in which is established.

As from past years, the Indian furniture market is estimated to be worth US$ 7,922 million. Of this, wooden furniture accounts for US$ 1,358 million. About 11 per cent (US$ 152 million) of this (wooden furniture) is imported and imports are growing at 50 to 60 per cent every year. India was the largest furniture importer in the world.

A typical middle class urban Indian home has five rooms (including kitchen and bathroomThe type of furniture used depends on the customers affluence and taste. Office Furniture The office furniture segment caters to the commercial and office space. Contract segment The contract segment caters primarily to hotels and its growth isconsequently linked to growth in tourism and development of new hotels.
