English Project - Born To Die Script
Today we are going to present you our project with the song Born 2 Die by Lana Del Rey. Lets hear the song first. Please note that what we are doing today is only part of the song. Queenie: We found 5 poetic techniques in the song. i) Rhyming ii) alliteration iii) assonance iv) oxymoron and v) Paradox. Michelle: First rhymes can be found throughout the song. With line and mine in the first stanza, cry, why and high in the second stanza. Charis: Rain and insane in the third stanza, with I and die in the same stanza. Last but not the least, blind and find in the fourth stanza. These rhymes give a strong beat to the song. Kathy: Alliteration is found in the song, too. Both the m sound and the f sound is found in the line My, who me, my feet don't fail me now. The m sound is found in the words my and me, while the f sound is found In the word feet and fail. Natalie: The th sound in the line They'll tell me that you're mine and the m sound in the words me and mine and the f sound in the line I feel so alone on the Friday night. Queenie: The y sound is found in the 2 you in the line if I tell you you're mine, finally, in the line Let's go get high, the g sound is found. Michelle: Assonance is found in the line Let me kiss you hard in the pouring rain which makes the line seems much longer. Moreover, in the lines Oh my heart it breaks every step that I take, but I'm hoping at the gates and Is it by mistake or design, I feel so alone on the Friday night, breaks, take, gates, mistake and Friday, and design, I and night show assonance, which help with the flow of the song and make it more catchy. Charis: Then we come to oxymoron. Is it by mistake or design? in the first stanza demonstrated it. mistake and design are contradictory words. mistake means accidentally or not aiming to do that indeed, contrastingly, design means intentionally which is doing it on purpose. Kathy: Another pair of oxymoron is found in We were born to die. In stanza 3. The inconsistent words are born and die. born, meaning a brand new start; beginning of life; full of hope is completely against the word die, meaning end of life; cannot return to the past; chanceless. Natalie: Now lets talk about the last poetic technique that we have found in this poem, paradox. I feel so alone in the Friday night. The word alone and Friday night is
being contrasted. Queenie: Why is that so, couldnt you be alone in Friday? Michelle: Yes, and is there any contrast if that is a Monday or a Tuesday? Natalie: Thats what I am going to talk about. Do you remember the song Friday? Friday should be a party night and having so much fun, while this party night usually wont fall on Mondays or Tuesdays. However, 'I' was alone on that night. This illustrated the difference in the mood of Friday night. Queenie: Another paradox is found in the line I was so confused as a little child. children, is always pure and nave, they would not be confused or perplexed by the outside world. Michelle: The song might seem easy, but there are some in depth meanings that you might not know. First of all, Feet don't fail me now, Take me to the finish line in stanza 1, actually has a deeper meaning. Lets define the meaning of finish line. finish line here means the ending part of the persona and her boyfriends love. Although she is bringing memories back, she tells her feet not to bring her back to the old days, not to return as if she must walk on and get over him. Theres no return. Shes telling herself to persist to the end. Charis: Oh my heart it breaks every step that I take in the first stanza has a deeper meaning which means its hurting her more and more as she begins to accept the reality that the relationship is going to end. But she's still trying her best to accept it as she walks along the finishing line. Kathy: For the line But I'm hoping at the gates. They'll tell me that you're mine, we the the gates s meaning as the end. Although shes proceeding to the end of this relationship, unconsciously or consciously shes still hoping for a miracle or a change. She hopes that after all the things theyve gone through; the boy will still stay beside her. It also show the personas struggle of whether to continue a dying relationship or to begin a brand new one Natalie: Don't make me sad, don't make me cry. Sometimes love is not enough and the road gets tough I don't know why of the second stanza revealed the personas view that it is pointless to be sad or to cry because you know something will end. Sometimes love in a relationship is not enough to keep two people together. Queenie: The next line, Keep making me laugh, Lets go get high. The road is long, we carry on. Try to have fun in the meantime reflected that she realized their love wouldn't last forever. Its not permanent. Their relationship is destined to die and they shouldn't dwell on that. Shes telling herself to have fun in the meantime and treasure the rest of the time. Live everyday as if its the last day.
Michelle: Followed by Come and take a walk on the wild side. Let me kiss you hard in the pouring rain. You like your girls insane, so choose your last words. This is the last time 'Cause you and I, we were born to die Speak her last words in this line actually means not to be constrained by the eyes of others. The whole verse here is saying that they have each other in the moment but not for long. Thus, shes telling herself to be wild and to express her passion and love to her boyfriend. Charis: As for the last stanza, I feel so alone on the Friday night. Can you make it feel like home, if I tell you you're mine Here, memories are flashing back. Back to the time when they used to do all kinds of things together. Which we think include walking back home together on Friday nights. As you know, home always refer to a warm and cozy place full of love. But as they're breaking up, they no longer do that anymore so she's feeling lonely, and the loving home is no longer the same as before. Kathy: As for the last line, Lost but now I am found. I can see but once I was blind. I was so confused as a little child. Trying to take what I could get. Scared that I couldn't find. This few lines highlighted that when she was young and nave, like a little child, she didn't know how to let go and she used to cling on this relationship as tight as she could. She is scared that she couldn't find a better way out and she fears for losing him. Now, she's having a moment of clarity where she realizes her relationship is about to end but she finally accepts the truth, as if she can see again after being blind. Natalie: We have now got a better understanding toward this song, and this marks the end of our presentation. Thank you.
