Hot Potatoes - JCross


Why use JCross? A JCross activity allows you to create a crossword either by entering the words directly into the grid or automatically creating the crossword after a list of answers is given. This is ideal if you are creating a crossword from scratch and have no preconceived idea of how you want the crossword to be displayed. A Hint button allows the learner to see the first letter of the answer. Each time the Hint button is used the learner receives less overall marks once the JCross has been completed. How to create a JCross activity The following instructions will help you create the JCross activity shown above. (A video animation, showing steps 3-5, is available. See the instructions below.) 1. Start Hot Potatoes (Start > All Programs > Hot Potatoes 6) and double-click on JCross. 2. Click on Create a grid layout automatically button on the toolbar. 3. Type the following animal names into the box provided: a. Crocodile b. Zebra c. Rhinoceros d. Antelope e. Giraffe f. Lion g. Elephant h. Meerkat. 4. Click on Make the Grid. Then Click on Add Clues. 5. Select each answer then type the clue in the relevant box. Confirm OK for each clue. When all clues have been entered, click on OK. 6. Save the completed activity (File > Save As) on your E-Guides USB memory stick. Note that the file is a .jcw type. This is the file you will need to open if you want to edit the activity.

7. To enable the interactive exercise the exercise must be saved and converted to HTML. (File > Create Webpage > Web page for v6 browsers) or click on the icon on the toolbar. 8. Once the HTML file has been saved a View or upload the exercise dialogue box opens. Click on View the exercise in my browser.

Go to the section Content creation and open the Animations folder, and then double click on the hpcross.swf file. Now that you have tried a JCross activity why not create another one?
