-3-D printing can help solve medical problems by allowing for the fabrication of customized parts for patients. NASA wants to develop food using a printer for astronauts to go on long missions. -The Department of Homeland Security has admitted that any efforts to stop the printing of guns may be "in vain." -Founder of Defense Distributed Cody Wilson notes that information cannot be controlled on the internet. The files for gun blueprints have been downloaded extensively and can be found by making a Google search. Wilson was asked to give his blueprints to the U.S. State Department to see if the files comply with international arms-export regulations. -In a Department bulletin composed by the Joint Regional Intelligence Center, it was said that it is difficult to regulate the sharing of files that may pose "public safety risks." -Legislators like Steve Israel have proposed to renew the Undetectable Firearms Act. It would keep "plastic, hard-to-detect" guns illegal. -In California and the District of Columbia, legislators have planned to introduce bills involving the prohibition of printed guns. However, for the Department of Homeland Security, enforcement will be futile. -Such legislation would only curb the production of these weapons and not prevent it according to the memo. The distribution of digital files cannot be controlled, and the guns are also said to be difficult for magnetometers to detect. -Not only can guns be produced, but with 3-D printing, counterfeit parts for defense and commercial operations can be produced. -The U.S. Defense Department has had the issue of how counterfeit parts can be made in regards to military equipment. Flawed parts can enter into the supply chain. U.S. military technology can be copied. -Campbell is researching method to combat counterfeiting by utilizing nanoscale materials that can allow one to distinguish between the official and fake parts. -Some note that there is more of a risk to the producers then the targeted because of the inefficient materials available. -Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York and California state senator Leland Yee want new laws to ban 3-D printed guns. Yee wanted mandatory background checks. -Some want for people to register to have 3-D printers and for blueprint distributions to be restricted. -Terry Wohlers, an industry consultant of Wohlers Associates, noted that U.S. departments are discussing these registrations. -Darren Cahr, an intellectual-property attorney, details on the impossibility of regulation. -Legal questions revolve around whether the manufacturer would be held responsible for printing something. A factor that could be used by courts is foreseeability, so it would depend on the situation. -Currently, firearm manufacturers are protected from civil lawsuits in both federal or state courts through the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. It's is not clear if a printer manufacturer would e under the same law. -S. Kent Rockwell is the CEO of ExOne Company which builds 3-D printers. -The Obama administration has pledged $60 million to the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute.

-To help prevent counterfeiting, quantum dots are being embedded with markers for companies to tag products; this technology is not widespread yet. Lawsuits can be used but may alienate customers. -Other worries revolve around second amendment and first amendment rights. Regulation is impossible has traces of 3-D printers may be difficult to find. Note the Rehap Project. -Recently, the Obama administration pledged $200 million for a competition to create new manufacturing innovation insititutes. -3-D printing has been around for decades but is now affordable for the average consumer.
