Department of Materials Science and Engineering MSE626N: Assignment 1 Semester I, 2013-2014 Problem 1

1) The document presents 4 problems related to fluid flow. Problem 1 deals with 1D flow over a vertical plate driven by gravity and derives an expression for film thickness. 2) Problem 2 considers fully developed flow between two concentric cylinders and determines the velocity profile and shear stress at the outer wall. 3) Problem 3 examines radial flow in an axisymmetric gas stirred ladle system and how the radial flow varies with distance from the center. 4) Problem 4 derives an expression for the complete emptying time of liquid steel from a cylindrical ladle through a nozzle based on a macroscopic energy balance.

MSE626N: Assignment 1; Semester I, 2013-2014

Problem 1
Consider steady, 1-D constant property, incompressible fluid flow along a stationary vertical plate driven purely by
gravity. The flow over the plate results in a film of constant thickness . Given that volumetric flow rate due to
film flow is Q, starting with the relevant generalized continuity and momentum balance equations given below,
obtain an expression for in terms of Q,g, and . Assume unit depth of the vertical plate. The governing
equations are:

Problem 2

Consider fully developed, constant property, incompressible, steady and Newtonian flow in the annular region of
two vertical concentric infinitely long cylinder. The flow is due to the rotation of the inner cylinder (radius R
1

and rotational speed ). Determine the (i) the velocity profile, V

, as a function of radial distance and (ii) the shear

stress at the wall of the stationary outer cylinder ( radius R

and momentum balance equations. Start your derivation after due simplification

Problem 3

At the base of an axisymmetrical gas stirred ladle system, flow of steel is practically uni-dimensional and
directed towards the centre where the plug is located. How does the radial flow component in the region
expected to vary in magnitude as a function of the radial distance? Assume steady and incompressible
flow conditions. The equation of mass continuity for axi-symmetrical flow is represented as:

Problem 4

A ladle (radius =R and height of initial liquid column=L; assume perfectly cylindrical shape) holding M
amount of liquid steel is being emptied through an opening (i.e. a nozzle) located at the base of the ladle,
having a diameter d" . On the basis of macroscopic energy balance, derive an expression for complete
emptying time in terms of key operating parameters such as R, L,d etc.
