Word Problems in Oblique Triangles (Cosine Law)

This document contains 4 problems involving oblique triangles and the cosine law. The problems involve: 1) Finding missing measurements of an oblique triangle given some information. 2) Finding the length of the larger diagonal of a parallelogram given the lengths of two sides and one angle. 3) Finding the distance and bearing between two boats that left a pier on different courses and speeds. 4) Finding the direct distance and bearing between two cities A and B where a pilot flew different courses and distances to avoid a mountain between the cities.

PROBLEM INVOLVING OBLIQUE TRIANGLES

COSINE LAW:
1. Given the triangle below, solve for the measurements of the missing parts.
Finding a: Finding mB: Finding mC:
2. A parallelogram has sides of lengths 10.3 cm and 23.2 cm and one angle is 54.2. What is the length of the larger
diagonal?
3. (taken at item #31, page 457) At 9am, a boat leaves a pier on a course of 63.2 at 8 knots. At 10am another boat
leaves the same pier on a course of 108.4 at 10 knots. At 12 noon, (a) what is the distance between the boats?
(b) what is the bearing from the first to the second ship?
4. (taken at item #31, page 457) A pilot going from city A to city B must avoid a mountain. The pilot flies on a course of
52 for a distance of 160 miles and then alters the course to 105 and arrives at B after flying another 108 miles.
(a) Find the direct distance from A to B. (b) What is the bearing from A to B?
