Atwood's Procedures1 - Revised

1. The document describes an experiment using Atwood's machine to investigate Newton's second law. The experiment involves measuring the time it takes for different masses on two hangers connected by a string and pulley to drop. 2. Formulas are provided to calculate theoretical and experimental acceleration as well as gravitational force. Data is collected and calculations are shown for five trials with varying masses. 3. Observations note that acceleration decreases as mass increases and differences in mass affect time. The conclusion states that acceleration varies with changing masses and results validate Newton's second law.

ATWOODS MACHINE

REVISED PROCEDURE:
1. Set up the pulley to the iron stand at approximately 1 meter above the floor. 2. Pass a 2-meter string through the pulley and put the 100 grams hanger on each end. 3. Put a 200-gram weight on one hanger and label it as 4. Label the other hanger as diminish its weights in every trial. 5. Measure the maximum height of travelled by 6. Hold 7. in a certain time. to the floor so that reaches its maximum height. Release and record the time for when is attached to the floor. This will be the distance . Let this mass be constant in all trials.

. In this hanger, put variable masses in every trial. You may add or

to drop on the floor. Use the stopwatch. Lay down the book/s under to minimize the noise when the weights is dropped. Record the masses, time elapsed and height. Convert mass to weights in Newtons and calculate the downward-accelerations of the . Do the same procedure in every trial. Perform at least 5 trials.

OBSERVATIONS:

During the experiment, the hangers are at equilibrium when each has the same mass. When the hangers have different masses, the one who has the heavier mass will fall pulling the other hanger with it. The length of the string also affects the acceleration of the experiment and also the performance. We found that an increasing difference between the weights shortened the time considerably. As the masses in the hanger decreasing. are increasing, the downward-accelerations of is

The apparatus must be installed in a leveled surface to avoid unnecessary errors. You must be accurate in recording the time for huge percentage error. The iron stand should be held firmly in using heavy masses to avoid accidents and error. Always check that the string is in the pulleys and the hangers are in place in every trial to avoid errors. Our graph doesnt produce a straight line due to some arithmetic errors. to drop on the floor because it may result to

CONCLUSION:

The acceleration of the system varies with changing masses.

In using the formulas of the theoretical and experimental acceleration and the gravitational force we see its low percentage error in the results that further corroborate the Newtons Second law that acceleration is directly proportional the net force, and inversely proportion to the sum of the masses that clearly shows in our graph.
