Psychopathology

There are three levels of psychiatric nursing: 1) mental health promotion and education, 2) crisis intervention for short-term hospitalization, and 3) rehabilitation therapies. A good psychiatric nurse is accepting, empathetic, sensitive, consistent, flexible, and accountable. The roles of the nurse include teacher, socializing agent, technician, parent surrogate, patient advocate, counselor, ward manager, and creator of a therapeutic environment. The goals of psychiatric nursing are promotion of mental health, prevention and early treatment of mental illness, and rehabilitation to prevent disability and relapse.
