It is always an upsetting experience to be the victim of a burglary, as it means a stranger with
bad intentions has been inside your home. So, don't sit and wait for a burglary, but take active
steps to secure your environment. It need not be expensive.
Take a look at your house from a burglar's perspective. There might be several ways your
house can be entered easily. Take appropriate precautions, because the more you hinder a
burglar, the greater the chance you will avoid a break-in.
In and around your house
You want to fee) safe not only in your neighbourhood, but also in your house.
There are a number of steps you can take to achieve this. The following precautions are usually
sufficint to deter burglars.
Ensure that your hinges and locks meet the requirements of the Politie Keurmerk Veilig
Wonen (PKVW; police quality mark for home security devices). PKVWcompanies
can provide you with advice tailored to meet your personal circumstances. Check
www.politiekeurmerk.nl for further details.
Secure all downstairs windows and doors. Also consider precautions against entry via
upper floors which can be accessed easily by climbing or via a ladder, such as
windows and doors of balconies, roof terraces or sun roofs.
Loek windows and doors. Just closing the front door behind you is not enough; turn the
key at least once. That prevents what the Dutch cali flipperen (pinballing): opening a
loek with a piece of plastic, such as a bank card. Do not leave the key in the loek on
the inside of the door.
Have the front door fitted with a loek which has a built-in deadlock or have a separate
deadlock installed.
Do not turn your home into a shop window by spotlighting your antique clock or
valuable painting.
Ensure adequate visibility and lighting around your home. Prune or remove shrubs
behind which a burglar can hide and place external lighting fitted with intgral dusk-to-
dawn sensors near doors.
Have a 'peep hole' installed in your front door if there is no small window in or next to
the door. This will enable you to see who is standing at the door.
Do not place ladders or any other material which could be used to climb into your
property in the garden. A dustbin is often sufficint for a burglar to reach a balcony.
Do not leave your car keys and laptop on show. These are particularly attractive to
many burglars.
Do not attach an address to your bunch of keys. If you lose it, anyone could be able to
enter your home.

An alarm system and/or a safe as an additional measure is a choice you can make.
Perhaps you have valuable items or you live in a secluded area. Sometimes insurance
companies require these types of measures.
When you are away from home
For a short while
Before you leave, check whether you have closed and locked all windows and doors.
Always double-lock the door: turn the key in the loek twice after closing it.
If you go out in the evening, leave the radio or television and the lights on.
Consider using timers. You can also leave a coffee cup or a newspaper on the table.
Do not put a note on your door saying 'TH be right back".
For a longer period of time
Connect your lamps to time switches. Set them in such a way that the lights switch on
and off at different times in different rooms.
Do not close the curtains if you leave for a longer period of time.
Do not mention on your answering machine or voicemail that you are not at home.
Ask your neighbours, family or a friend to drop by - preferably daily - to empty the
letterbox and to keep an eye on your home.
Never put your house key in a 'secret place' outside the house.
Rent a safe at the bank for your valuables or hide them in different places around your
home. You can also buy a safe at a reasonable price.
Emergency help: 112
Always cali 112 if you see something suspicious in your neighbourhood. Note the number plates
of suspicious cars and give them to the police. Remain calm. State your name, your place of
residence, the location of the suspicious individual or circumstance and what precisely is raising
your suspicion. Do not hang up before the police officer on the phone has finished asking
questions.
No emergency, but still need to contact the police: 0900-8844
Haaglanden police can only combat crime with assistance. You can also be of help. If you
notice anything abnormal, report it to the police via 0900-8844 (local rate). For example, if you
have not witnessed a burglary, but discover at a later date that a burglary has taken place.
Filing a report with the police
If, despite all preventive measures, you become a burglary victim, always file a report with the
police, preferably immediately after you discover your house has been burgled. In this way, we
can try to trac the perpetrator and prevent others becoming victims of a burglary. In some
cases, you can file a report via the internet. See www.politie.nl/aanqifte for more information.
