Instructor Development
Fact Sheet

About the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC)
Before the IDC:
At Mikes Dive Store, we use the PADI eLearning option to cover some of the theory presentations this way
you get to study 2 days worth of modules in your own time at home before the course starts and means we can
focus on developing your presentations and skills during the IDC. The cost of the eLearning is not included as you
will need to set that up individually through your Divemaster login on the PADI pros site. If you are not a PADI
Divemaster, but are an instructor from a different agency, we would need to complete these modules in the
classroom. This would take place over two days and cost 215.

IDC Prep Course (299)
It is important to note that as PADI Divemasters or equivalent, you should already have a strong knowledge base,
enough to pass the Dive Theory exam during the IDC. If it has been a while since you studied the Dive Theory, we
recommend that you take the IDC Prep Course prior to attending the IDC. THE IDC IS TOO INTENSE FOR US TO
TEACH THIS TO YOU DURING THE COURSE. You can also complete the Dive Theory online.

During the IDC:
You will learn about the teaching methods which PADI Instructors utilise to ensure quality teaching. You will
participate and present classroom, confined water and open water teaching presentations. You will need to
participate in a demonstration quality skills circuit, pass the dive theory and general standards and procedures
exams as well as participate in several workshops.

The IDC is conducted by Emily Petley-Jones, our Course Director, as well as IDC Staff Instructors who will take you
through all the teaching methods, presentations, demonstrations that you need to know to become a successful and
confident PADI Instructor. Not only that, you will be supported throughout your IDC, IE and after your IE to make
sure that you get your PADI Instructor career off to a great start.

The PADI Instructor Exam (IE)
The exam is conducted directly by PADI Instructor Examiners and is entirely separate to the IDC, though we usually
coordinate our dates to coincide with an exam. During the two days, you will sit your Dive Theory and Standards
Exams; present a classroom theory presentation, as well as confined and open water teaching presentations.

Although you pass the Instructor Development Course, you must pass the Instructor Exam to become an Open
Water Scuba Instructor.

Other options for becoming an Open Water Scuba Instructor:
You can also become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor by splitting the full Instructor Development Course into
two parts: PADI Assistant Instructor and PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. To allow you greater flexibility on your
journey to becoming an instructor, both of these courses are provided on a part-time, evenings and weekends basis.

The most cost effective method to complete your Open Water Scuba Instructor rating is to complete the IDC in full.
By separating the AI and OWSI portions you will need to pay for each individual application to PADI. However, doing
this though does have its benefits: if you want to gain experience as an AI before proceeding to OWSI; if you dont
have the time to take off work to complete the full IDC; if you want to spread out payments over a period of time.

An important note to make on the pricing of the PADI Assistant Instructor and the Open Water Scuba Instructor is
that you will need to complete the eLearning for the PADI Assistant Instructor Course, but not for the Open Water
Scuba Instructor as long as you complete the OWSI portion within a year of your eLearning. This means that the

Instructor Development
Fact Sheet
OWSI course is cheaper. If your IDC eLearning is more than a year old, or you do not have the eLearning, we can
complete the missing sections in class. This is an additional 215 and two additional days to the OWSI course.

PADI Assistant Instructor

The PADI Assistant Instructor rating allows you to begin to teach certain courses including PADI Seal Team, Peak
Performance Buoyancy, AWARE Coral Reef Conservation and Project AWARE specialist programs. You will also be
able to assist instructors more in programs like the Open Water Course by assessing certain surface skills.
