Introduction
In this book, we will look at what Search Engine
Optimization (SEO) is, and the ways in which it can
be used. Through this book, we will proide you
with the basics on using Search Engine Optimization
in order to improe tra!!ic !low to your site.
"y many people, SEO is considered to be a part o!
search engine marketing. It is o!ten used when
people are describing a process !or improing the
amount o! tra!!ic that goes to a website !rom
arious di!!erent search engines. #any site owners
will engage in using SEO in an attempt to obtain
$uali!ied isitors to their site. The $uality o!
these isitors will o!ten be measured by what
speci!ic keywords they are using in order to reach
the desired result they want, such as making a
purchase, or it could %ust iewing or downloading a
particular page on that site. It may be that the
isitor %ust re$uests some !urther in!ormation, or
they sign up to a newsletter.
Search Engine Optimization is a marketing strategy
which can o!ten generate a good return !or the
site. "ut what must be remembered is that search
engines are not actually paid !or the tra!!ic they
send to a site !rom a natural (organic) search.
&lus, they will regularly change the algorithms
that they use !or these searches to be carried in
an e!!ort to improe the results !or people using
their search engine. In !act, there is no
guarantee that using this system is success!ul in
either the long or short term !or any website.
"ecause o! this, SEO is o!ten compared to
traditional !orms o! &' (&ublic 'elations), while
&&( (&ay per (lick) adertising is more closely
associated with traditional !orms o! adertising.
)oweer, een i! you do !ind you hae increased
tra!!ic to your site because o! SEO, i! your site
is unprepared !or this increased tra!!ic, it may in
!act be detrimental to your site, as isitors will
go away !eeling dissatis!ied and will not return.
"ut though SEO can be considered as a marketing
tactic which is a law unto itsel!, it is o!ten
considered to part o! the bigger picture by many
industry e*perts.
Chapter 1
Why Use Search Engine
Optimization
SEO (Search Engine Optimization), as already
preiously mentioned, is a sub section o! search
engine marketing.
+n!ortunately, with SEO, there are no shortcuts,
and i! you are looking !or a way to get $uick and
easy results, then this isn,t it. "ut instead, you
will need to carry out some hard work, especially
in relation to the actual content o! your site.
-lso, you will need to hae plenty o! patience, as
results do not happen oernight. So i! you are
looking to improe the search engine position o!
your site, you should consider this ery early on
when looking at using SEO.
)oweer, what are important are the !ollowing
points./
Good Content
This is probably the single most important point
you should remember when doing SEO, especially i!
you want your site to be !ound on the web.
-lthough your site may be technically per!ect so
that the search engine robots !ind it, you will
!ind that it will not help i! the actual content o!
your site is not good.
0or the content o! your site to be good, it should
be !actually, as well as grammatically correct.
"ut this is not really necessary !or eery site
that is on the web today. )oweer, what is
important is that whateer your site is about, the
content actually needs to be uni$ue and speci!ic so
that it will appeal to people. #oreoer, it in
!act needs to be particularly appealing to those
people looking !or in!ormation or who want to !ind
your site.
"y haing good content on your site, isitors will
return and eentually these isitors who return are
more likely to link to your site. )aing lots o!
inbound links is not only great !or your site, but
!or search engine rankings also. It is een better
i! those links are !rom more highly ranked sites
than your own.
-lso, not only do you need to hae good content on
your site, you also need to hae !resh content
also. I! you add new content to your site on a
regular basis, you are giing your isitors more
reasons !or returning to it. "ecause o! this,
search engine robots will also isit your site more
o!ten as soon as they notice that you are updating
it regularly. So what this means is that any new
content you add, will then be inde*ed much $uicker
in the !uture.
Check your Spellings
I! your site is written in English, then you are
probably aware o! the di!!erences in spelling
between -merican and "ritish English. 1here in the
+2 they will write 3colour4, in the +S- it is
written as 3color4, and the same can be said o!
3optimization4 and 3optimization4. So i! you can,
why not set up your machine so that the spell
checker is set up as +S- English rather than
"ritish English. +n!ortunately, there are many
words between these two languages that are o!ten
misspelled, and in !act, the same can be said !or
many other languages around the world.
Make sure your Page Titles are Descriptive
I! you make your page titles as simple, descriptie
and releant as possible, it will make it easier
!or the search engines to know what each page o!
your site is about. This will then allow people to
scan through the search results they get, and are
able to $uickly determine i! your document contains
what they are actually looking !or. -lso, it
should be remembered that the page title is also
what is used in order to link to your site !rom the
results proided by the search engines.
-s a result o! this, it is important to ensure that
the title on the page is one o! your most important
elements o! your site. In !act, some people will
argue that this the most important part o! any site
aboe all other things.
Use of Real Headings
This is where you need to use h5/h6 (header tags)
elements !or your headings. "y using graphics !or
your headings you are able to use any type!ace you
want (but search engines will not pay much
attention to this). Een i! you do use the alt
attribute to speci!y an alternate te*t !or heading
images, this is not anywhere near as important as
using real te*t in a heading element.
"ut i! you are unable to use real te*t, then look
at the arious image or !lash replacement
techni$ues that are aailable instead. )oweer, be
aware that there may be some risk inoled in doing
this. -s image replacement inoles hiding te*t,
it is $uite possible that you may be penalized by
search engines !or doing this. "ut at present,
this kind o! risk seems pretty slim.
Ensure that your UR!s are search engine friendly
It is important to use search engine !riendly
+'7,s, as opposed to dynamically generated ones
that hae a $uery string (which lets the serer
know which data to !etch !rom a database).
+n!ortunately, there are many search engine robots
which hae di!!iculties with this kind o! +'7 and
they may well stop at the $uestion mark, and so not
actually look at the $uery string.
"y using a search engine !riendly +'78 you are
helping both your ranking and users o! your site.
#any sites hae seen an incredible improement %ust
because they hae changed the +'7 scheme on it.
)oweer, the modi!ication and rewriting o! a site,s
+'7 can be a little tricky.
Getting inked
There is no easy or sustainable way in order to
sole this but !or one. The really only good way
to ensure that your site gets linked is to ensure
that it contains good content. 0or any site on the
web, incoming links are ery important, especially
!or Search Engine Optimization. In !act, you may
!ind that this is the hardest part o! SEO !or you
to implement.
"ut many people hae !ound that incoming links are
less important, especially where you hae more
speci!ic and uni$ue content on your site.
Make it "ccessi#le to "ll
This is as important as all things preiously
mentioned. It is important that you make your site
accessible to those who are isually impaired, as
this will help search engine robots !ind their way
around it also. It is important to remember that
9oogle is blind, so een i! you are not bothered
whether blind people use your site or not (which we
all should be in today,s world)8 you still need !or
it to be accessible. 1hat this means is that you
should use real headings, paragraphs and lists, and
aoid using anything which may inter!ere with the
search engines spiders.
$e Careful %hen &aking a Su#&ission
-lthough this is o!ten oerrated, submitting your
site to directories and search engines can actually
be use!ul. This is especially important i! the
site happens to be new and has not as yet been
picked up by 9oogle and many o! the other search
engines that are around.
"ut i! you do want to look at submitting it to some
directories, you may want to consider using :ahoo
;irectory and Open ;irectory &ro%ect and some
directories speci!ic to your topic (!or e*ample, i!
you hae a blog, try submitting to http.<<www.blog/
search.in!o). "ut you will need patience, as it
can take seeral weeks !or any submissions to be
processed unless you pay !or it to be listed.
Do not try to fool the Search Engines
=eer use such methods as cloaking, link !arms,
keyword stu!!ing, alt te*t spamming or any other
dubious ways. -lthough they may work !or a short
time, you not only risk getting your site
penalized, but it could actually be banned !rom
search engines altogether.
-s search engines like their results to be
accurate, they %ust do not take kindly to people
trying to trick them.
"void the use of 'ra&es
-lthough it is possible to proide workarounds that
will allow a search engine robot to crawl !rame
based sites, these will still cause problems !or
any isitors who !ind that site through a search
engine.
1hat happens is that when someone !ollows a link
!rom a search result to a !rame based site, they
will end up on an orphaned document. This will, in
most cases, create con!usion !or the user, as in
many cases, ital parts o! the site will be lost,
such as naigational links.
$ro%ser Detection ( $e Careful
I! you hae to use some kind o! browser detection,
then make sure that it does not break when a search
engine spider or any other unknown agent comes
along. +n!ortunately, i! the spiders can not get
in, then your site will not be !ound.
Do not %aste your ti&e %ith Meta Tags
:ou will !ind that most search engines do not place
a great deal o! alue on the content contained
within #eta Tags today. This is because they hae
been used too much by spammers. So instead, i! you
need to, use #eta description elements. -lthough
keywords will not hurt, they don,t really help
either, so generally it is not worth the e!!ort to
use them.
O!ten there are some search engine sites which will
use the content o! a #eta description element to
describe a site in their search result listings.
So wheneer possible, make their contents uni$ue
and descriptie !or eery document or page.
-s stated at the beginning o! this chapter, we hae
proided a !ew basic guidelines in relation to SEO.
"ut there is much more that can be done in order to
increase your site,s isibility with search
engines.
Chapter 2
What is the Basic Link Structure
ithin a Site
This is probably the most obious, but certainly
one o! the most oerlooked aspects o! search engine
optimization. This helps to make sure that search
engine spiders can actually !ind (crawl) all o!
your site,s pages. "ut i! they can not !ind them,
then they won,t get spidered, and this means that
they won,t get inde*ed. In !act, no amount o!
search engine optimization you try will help.
"elow are some points that should be taken note o!
in respect o! link structure !or your site.
Spiders can not see links which are accomplished by
>aaScript. This is because, as !ar as search
engines will be concerned, they do not e*ist. So
i! you want spiders to !ollow the links on your
site, do not use >aaScript. In !act, you will
!ind that 9oogle will not spider any +'7 i! it
looks like it has a session I; in it. So any +'7,s
that hae a longish number or odd characters (such
as a $uestion mark) in them should be aoided
(these are o!ten dynamic +'7,s).
It is important that you make sure that all pages
link to at least one other page. &ages which do
not link out are known as 3dangling links4. It is
important that you structure the internal links so
that targeted search terms are rein!orced. So make
sure that you organize your links so that your
topic,s sub topic pages are linked to it (ensuring
that you use the right link te*t that is speci!ic
to the page being linked to) and ice ersa. See
below !or the di!!erent types o! methods we mean.
ink Te)t *+a href,-url-.so&e link te)t+/a.
This is one o! the ? most important elements to
ensure good rankings !or a site. It can either be
on pages within the site, or on other sites,
pages. "ut which eer way you do it, it is
important that it is included. It is ital that
you include the target page,s main search term in
the link te*t. -lso, wheneer possible, do not
use identical te*t !or eery link that links to a
page. "ut i! you can include the target page,s
main search term in the link te*t instead.
In !act, links will carry more weight with search
engines i! the te*t around them is concerned with
the target page,s topic and search term(s).
Title Tag +title.so&e title %ords+/title.
This is probably second most important element in
order to get good rankings !or a site. It is
important that you make sure the page,s search
term is contained within this tag. So place it as
near to the !ront as possible while ensuring that
the title reads well. In !act, there is nothing
wrong with you placing the search term up !ront on
its own and then !ollow it with a period such as
3&age 'ank. 9oogle &age 'ank and how do I make the
most o! it@4 -s you can see, the target search
term here is o! course 3&age 'ank4. "ut what you
should obiously do is make sure that each page,s
title tag is di!!erent !rom the title tags on your
site,s other pages.
Description Tag +&eta na&e,-description-
content,-a nice description-.
:ou will !ind that some search engines, such as
9oogle no longer display the description like they
use to. "ut no matter what, you should include
this on each page !or those search engines that
do. There are een the odd times when 9oogle will
actually display them. So it is ital that you
write a description that is appealing and
incorporates the page,s search term into it at
least once but pre!erably twice is better. So i!
you can, place one at the start or as near to the
start o! the description as possible.
0ey%ords Tag +&eta,-key%ords- content,-so&e
key%ords-.
It is important to remember that the keywords tag
is neer actually treated by search engines as
keywords. They will be treated as te*t on a page.
-lthough this tag is not e!!ectie as it used to
be, there is no reason to leae it out. Instead,
make sure that you put in plenty o! releant
keywords and include the search term once at the
!ront o! the tag. -lso, you do not need to
separate keywords or key phrases with commas (as
is o!ten done) as search engines ignore these.
H Tag +Hn.so&e heading %ords+/Hn.
The 3n4 in this tag represents a number !rom 5 to
6. The biggest heading is represented by 5. :ou
will !ind that ) tags are gien more weight than
ordinary te*t in a page, and so the bigger the )
size, the more weight it will hae. So it is
important that you include your target search term
in the ) tags at least once on the page, but i!
possible two or three times is een better. -lso
place your !irst ) Tag as near to the top o! the
site page as possible.
$old Te)t
This gies more weight to a page than ordinary
te*t, but not as much as an ) Tag does. So where
eer possible, enclose the search term in bold
tags occasionally where it appears on the page.
1or&al Te)t
1heneer possible, use the search term as o!ten as
you can on the pages o! your site. "ut ensure
that they do not detract !rom how the page
actually reads. Ensure that you use the term once
or twice in the ery early pages o! the body te*t,
and then as o!ten as possible throughout. I! you
need to, reword small parts and add sentences to
ensure that the search term is well represented in
the te*t !or good search engine optimization.
"ut you will probably !ind that each word you hae
in your search term will be !ound separately on
the page. So, i! you need to, add a !ew o! them
throughout the page.
"lt Te)t +i&g src,-url- alt,-so&e alt te)t %hich
is displayed or &ouseover-.
Include your search term in the alt te*t o! all
images on your pages. It is important to remember
that some systems, such as those used by "raille
readers and speech synthesizers, use the alt te*t.
So it may be adisable to make them usable while
including the search term.
So in summary what you need to do is as !ollows./
5. Select the main search terms you wish to use.
?. -llocate these search terms to a suitable
e*isting page, and i! you need to, split
pages.
A. Organize your internal links, and then link
te*t, to suit the target search terms and
their pages.
B. I! you can, organize those links !rom other
pages to suit the target search terms and
their pages also.
C. =ow organize all the on page elements in order
that they suit each page,s target search term.
6. 0inally, now sit back and watch your site,s
page rankings begin to improe.
Chapter !
E""ecti#e Use o" $eyords "or
SEO
1hat you should remember is that Search Engine
Optimization does not need to be complicated.
1hat you should do is make sure that each and
eery page o! your site is a uni$ue entity, and
needs to be treated in the appropriate manner
where SEO is concerned. "elow we proide you with
some guidelines which should help you achiee your
desired SEO results.
Get the 0ey%ords Right
It is important that you make sure the selected
words you use meet your marketing criteria. So do
not pick words which are too general. +sing words
that are more speci!ic will result in a higher
ranking !or your site. -lso, it is important that
you choose words which are suitable to your site.
0or e*ample, you will !ind that 3optimizing search
engines4 and 3search engine optimization4 hae
completely di!!erent rankings.
2nclude key%ords in your Page Titles
+n!ortunately, a lot o! people will use either
inappropriate names or their company name in the
page,s titles. So it is important that you
include the appropriate keywords in your title, as
that is they way people carry out searches on the
internet.
2nclusion of key%ords in your Title Tags and Meta
Tags
It is ital that, !or each page o! your site, you
include the appropriate keywords within all the
page,s tags. -lso, take time to go oer the #eta
description that you use. :ou should make sure
that any description you use is alluring and
interesting to those who are isiting your site,
and include keywords within it whereer possible.
There are many search engines around today which
use the #eta description as the thing that will be
displayed in their search results.
0ey%ords in Content
It is important that you make sure you include
keywords in the content o! your site as well. "ut
do not oer do this, as too many will result in
your page being discounted by the search engines.
+sing these basic guidelines in relation to
keywords in relation to search engine optimization
and you will !ind that your site can not help but
be a!!ected in a positie way.
Chapter %
&o to 'etermine the $eyord
Se(ection "or )our Site
#aking a website attractie to search engines is a
key !actor !or its success. One o! the key ways
in which to rank well with search engines is by
optimizing the isible keywords on the pages.
"ut in order to be success!ul in your keyword
strategy campaign, you should use the !ollowing
two steps.
0ey%ord Selection
:ou will need to determine what your pages are
o!!ering and also determine which words that your
potential isitors might use in order to search
!or the pages o! your site. :ou then need to
create keywords which are based on those words.
0or the !ull optimization o! keywords on your site
you should use between A to C keywords on the
appropriate pages. It is ital that you start
using them !rom the top le!t and then down. #any
times you will !ind that this will be the !irst
?DD words on each page o! your site which will
include the title tag, headings, abstract etc.
So the closer to the top le!t o! your page the
keywords are placed then the more weight they will
be gien by 9oogle. O!ten, isitors will iew
your site in the same way that the search engine
spider,s do, so emphasizing your keywords !rom the
top le!t and down is a good way to design a site.
)oweer, i! your pages are already built, you may
be thinking it is too late to select your
keywords. "ut it,s not. It does not matter i!
you choose your keywords be!ore or a!ter the site
has gone lie (although it is better to do it
be!ore, as then you will not need to rewrite the
te*t on the pages). "ut i! it is lie, then you
may hae the keywords, but they may not be the
right ones. :et they could be and you hae not
!ully utilized their optimization alue. So, i!
you wish, by using a thorough keyword selection
process, you can make sure that they keywords you
are using are optimized to their !ullest e*tent.
-lso, another issue where keyword selection is
concerned is you need to determine whether the
keyword is too popular or competitie. So i! you
!ind sites that are already competing !or high
rankings using particular keywords, then you may
need to select more speci!ic keywords instead.
This can also be said !or keywords which hae
seeral di!!erent meanings as well. There!ore it
is important that you look how users will search
!or your pages, and which speci!ic $uestions the
content o! your pages actually answers. So
wheneer possible, re!ine the keywords that you
use in order to answer these $uestions.
"ut wheneer you are re!ining your keywords, it is
important that you keep in mind that a large
portion o! searches carried out on the net contain
three words or more. So when people are searching
!or answers on the internet, they will o!ten
phrase their search term as a $uestion. There!ore
many people will not use search words that
describe the solution to a $uestion. So in order
to optimize your pages to their !ull e*tent, it is
best i! you think like the person who is
searching.
Check out the Co&petition
This is a great way o! getting ideas, and you do
this by carrying out a search using keywords that
you already know, and that you would like to
target. Then click through the top sites that
come up as a result o! this search. Then once on
the site, iew their source )T#7 code and iew the
keywords that they hae in their #eta tags. "ut
it is important that you remember to use those
keywords which relate to your site or page. It is
easy to iew a sites )T#7 code, all you do is
click on the 3Eiew4 button at the top o! your web
browser page and then select 3Source4 or 3&age
Source4.
"y deeloping a list o! keyword phrases, you
should be able to optimize each page o! your site
!or the search engines.
Chapter *
What is Search Engine +riend(y
Content
In this chapter, we will look at %ust what search
engine !riendly content is. -lthough you may
think it is about stu!!ing your website with
target keywords, it isn,t. In !act, you may !ind
that you could !all !oul o! the search i! you do
this. 1hat you need to remember is that you need
to write copy that not only spiders will look at,
but also human beings will as well. 1hat is the
point o! haing a site that is highly ranked, yet
none o! your isitors can understand@ So it is
ital that your site is user !riendly to both your
isitors, as well as search engine spiders.
0irst o! all you need to answer the !ollowing
$uestions./
5. 1hat is your site !or@
?. 1hat does it do@
A. 1hat do you want your isitors to do when they
reach it@
B. 1ould you like them to spend money when they
get to it@
C. Or are you %ust proiding them with
in!ormation@
So you need to remember these, as they will hae
an impact on the copy that you write !or the
content o! your site.
So wheneer possible, use short paragraphs or
bullet points, as these are more likely to attract
isitors, while more lengthy essays will only
drie them away.
"ut i! you are selling a serice or product then
you need to make your site look interesting.
&roide as many calls to action as you can, and
not %ust proide them with an online price list.
So remember that you are trying to attract the
search engines, but your site should be designed
!irst and !oremost !or human readers. -s long as
a site has been designed well with people in mind,
then F times out o! 5D you will !ind that it is
search engine !riendly also.
>ust like a isitor to your site reads the copy on
your page in order to !igure out what you hae to
o!!er, so does a search engine. So when a search
engine is looking at your page, they are looking
!or keyword phrases in your copy ((ontent).
"elow are proided a number o! tips which should
help in your SEO using the content on your site.
5. :ou should hae at least ?DD words o! copy on
each page o! your site. -lthough this may be
di!!icult at times, search engines really like
it, so it is important that you increase the
amount o! copy where you are able to.
9enerally speaking, once you surpass 5,DDD
words, the search engines will pretty much
stop lookingGso no need to get too long,
unless the desired action you want !rom the
isitor re$uires it.
This te*t, whereer possible, should include
your most important keyword phrases, but
should still remain logical and easy to read
by isitors to the site.
?. Ensure that you use the phrases which you hae
used in the other tags on the pages during
this part o! the optimization process.
A. -dd additional copy !illed pages to the site,
such as how to articles, tips or tutorials.
=ot only do these types o! pages help with
SEO, but you may !ind that other sites will
link to yours.
These tips should not be ignored, as optimizing
your page copy (content) is one o! the most
important things you could possibly do in order to
improe your rankings in the Search Engines.
Chapter ,
&o do Back(inks &e(p ith
SEO
- backlink is a link which directs others towards
your site8 they are also o!ten re!erred to as
inbound links (I"7,s). So, the number o!
backlinks that your site has is an indication o!
how popular or important it is according to your
peers (other site owners). These are especially
important !or SEO, as search engines such as
9oogle will gie more credit to those sites with a
good number o! $uality backlinks. So they will
then consider these sites more releant than

#ost search engines will want websites to hae a
leel playing !ield, and so will more o!ten than
not look !or natural links that hae been built
slowly oer time. -lthough it can be !airly easy
to manipulate the links on a web page in order to
achiee a higher ranking, it is a lot harder to
in!luence a search engine with e*ternal backlinks
!rom another site. This is why these !eature so
highly in a search engine,s algorithm. Today it
has gotten een harder to achiee these inbound
links because o! unscrupulous webmasters. Such
people try to achiee these links by deceptie or
sneaky techni$ues (through either hidden links or
through automatically generated pages). Such
pages are known as link !arms and they are
generally disregarded by search engines. "ut i!
you are linked to such a link !arm, then you may
!ind your site being banned entirely !rom these
search engines.
-nother way o! achieing $uality backlinks to a
site is to entice $uality isitors to come to
yours.
There are a number o! ways in which back linking
can be achieed.
5. 'eciprocal 7inking / this is where you link to

directories. There are many sites around
which o!!er a serice where you can submit
your site details to numerous sites. &lus, i!
you want, you can always create your own
directory o! similar websites.
A. -rticles. This is another way o! getting
great backlinks. So i! you hae a reputable
looking site that contains in!ormatie, well
written reiews, then there is a good chance
that your articles will receie high search
engine rankings also. "ut it is ital that
any articles you write are on the sub%ect,
in!ormatie and thorough in relation to your
site. -lso you could always write a !ew
articles !or submission to article sites such
as Ezine-rticles.com or Search1arp.com. This
is another great way o! getting een more
backlinks to your site.
"elow are a !ew tips you will need to consider
in order to write good articles !or your site.
a. 1rite in a way that your intended target

oerly complicated.
b. 1atch your spelling, grammar and
punctuation. I! in doubt, then use your

e!!ectie ways o! linking. :ou either hae

Conc(usion
-s you will soon see, search engines are one o! the
primary ways in which internet users will !ind a
particular website. So that is why a site with
good search engine listings is likely to see a
dramatic increase in the tra!!ic that it receies.
-lthough eerybody wants good listings, there are
un!ortunately many sites which appear poorly or not
at all in search engine rankings. This is because
they hae !ailed to consider %ust e*actly how a
search engine works.
In particular, they !orget that submitting to
search engines is only part o! the e$uation when
you are trying to get a good search engine ranking
!or your site. So there!ore, it is important that
you prepare your site through search engine
optimization.
This ensures that the pages o! your site are
accessible to search engines and are !ocused in
such a way that they will help improe the chances
o! them being !ound by the search engine spiders.
