Ten public agencies have responsibilities related to transportation in the Duwamish area. The US Coast Guard is responsible for navigability in waterways and operating a local bridge. The US Army Corps of Engineers handles habitat restoration, Superfund cleanup, and dredging. A community forum will provide details on what each agency does and how they can improve coordination.

WHO DOES WHAT IN THE DUWAMISH?

Ten different public agencies possess responsibility for some aspect of transportation
in the Duwamish. Find out who does what and how they might do it better at the next
Duwamish Transportation Management Association Community Forum.

US Coast Guard
USCG protects national waters and maintains navigability of domestic waterways.
Locally, the Coast Guard is also responsible for opening and closing the SW Spokane
St. Swing Bridge to allow marine traffic between the Duwamish River and Elliot Bay.

US Army Corps of Engineers


The Corps is involved in Duwamish River habitat restoration, Superfund cleanup and
dredging the Duwamish River. It will play a permit role when or if the South Park Bridge
is rebuilt.

Federal Aviation Administration


FAA is responsible for airplane certification and safety, and local airport compliance
with federal aviation policies and regulations.

Federal Railroad Administration


FRA formulates, promotes and enforces national rail regulations and oversees freight
and passenger rail services.

King County International Airport (KCIA)/Boeing Field.


King County government owns and operates Boeing Field in compliance with FAA and
Washington State policies and regulations.

King County Metro


Metro provides countywide bus service, special event shuttles and supports alternative
transportation modes including vanpools, carpools and bicycling. Metro’s central bus
maintenance base is in SODO.

Port of Seattle
The Port owns and operates regional marine shipping terminals, passenger cruise
terminals, public marinas and Fisherman’s Terminal. The Port also contributes to road
and rail infrastructure.

Sound Transit
ST plans, builds and operates regional rail and bus transit systems in King, Pierce and
Snohomish counties. The ST maintenance base is in SODO.

Seattle Department of Transportation


SDOT plans, builds and operates local roads and bridges, traffic signals and signs,
public parking areas, and bicycle and pedestrian routes.

Washington State Department of Transportation


WSDOT plans, builds and operates state highways, the ferry system and partners with
local governments on complex projects such as the Alaskan Way Viaduct. It also
provides statewide programs to support freight, aviation and railroad traffic.
