Background
Concreteisoneofthemostwidelyusedconstruction
materialsincivilengineering(buildings,bridges,
tunnels,roads,airfields,ports,dams,etc)
Concreteisacompositematerialmadeofaggregates
(crushedstone),sand,cementandwater.Itderives
itsstrengthfromthebindingcapacityofcement
whenitgetshydrated.
Thestrengthofconcretedependsonthequalityof
theingredients,theirproportion,curingconditions,
andhandling.
Themostimportantbehaviorofconcrete,tothecivil
engineer,isitscompressivestrength.
TestMethods
DestructiveTesting
Aspecimenissubjectedtoincreasingamountofcompressiveload,

Involves
Preparationofspecimenofpredefineddimensions
Curingundercontrolledconditions
Crushingthespecimenundercompressiveload
Recordthemaximumload
Advantages

TestingProcedure
1. Useavernier tomeasurethedimensionsoftheconcrete

Involves
PressingtheSchdmit Hammerperpendicularagainsta
concretesurface
Recordnumberofrebounds
Convertthenumberofreboundstocompressivestrengthby
usingcalibrationcharts
Advantage
Timesaving
Testingcanberepeatedonthesamestructure
Enablecontinuousmonitoringoftheperformanceofthe
structure
Disadvantage
Strengthpropertiesarenotmeasureddirectly,thusneeds
calibration

Whatistheestimatedstrengthof200mmconcretecube?
Solution
Averagereboundnumber
=(44+46+42+44+44+45+
45+43+43+44)/10=44
UsingCalibrationchart,
thecubestrength=48MPa
