Slump Test
Slump Test
OBJECTIVE
This test is conducted in order to determine the workability of sample fresh concrete of given grade and/or proportions.
THEORY For fresh unsupported concrete there will be flow to the sides and sinking of height. The vertical settlement is known as slump. The test is conducted by filling fresh concrete into mould of specified shape and the slump is measure after the mould is removed. Slump increases as water cement ratio increases and for different slump value is suitable. APPARATUS 1. A frustum shape cone mould with following internal dimensions Lower diameter : 200 + 3 - 1.6mm Upper diameter : 100 + 3 - 1.6mm Height diameter : 300 + 5 1.6mm 2. Rigid plate 3. Scoop, steel rule, trowel, rag, tamping rod and thermometer
Procedures : i. ii. iii. Prepare the concrete with suitable mix proportion Make sure the mould is clean and dry inside and then stand on the smooth hard plate Fill in the mould with concrete in three layers with approximately 1/3 of the mould height for every layers. Compact each layer 25 times with the rounded end steel rod (tamping rod)
iv. v. vi.
After the top layer has been tamped, smooth off by passing the rod over the mould and level with a trowel Clean the base of the mould from concrete that have dropped and leaked out Slowly lift up the mould in a vertical direction. Invert the mould and place it down on the plate close to the mould of concrete. As soon as the mould was lifted the concrete will slump to some extent Rets the rod across the top of the inverted empty mould, so that it touches over the mould o concrete. Measure the difference between the top most of the concrete and the mould height Record the data
