Building Science 2 Report

The document analyzes and formulates the appropriate lighting and acoustic settings for a new community library located in an urban infill site. For lighting, it evaluates the daylighting in the gallery space and artificial lighting in the study area. It determines the lighting meets standards. For acoustics, it analyzes external noise levels in the bookstore, reverberation time in the librarian's office, and transmission loss between the computer space and gallery. Treatments like wall coverings are recommended to improve acoustics where needed.

1.0 Introduction
The site selected is an urban infill project, a new community library located in Brickfields. This report is
to analyze and formulate an appropriate lighting and acoustic setting which will help to further enhance
the interior with the help or artificial and natural factors in the site. The lighting set up includes the
natural daylighting, artificial lighting and the integrated systems of both natural and artificial lightings.
The acoustics analysis is to report on the appropriate reverberation time, combined sound pressure
level and transmission loss between different spaces selected.

2.0 Lighting
2.1 Daylighting

Figure 1 Floor plan of Gallery

The selected area for daylighting analysis is the Galleria located on the First floor of the library. The only
source of daylighting is from the curtain walls located at the faade facing the main road.
DF = (E/ Eo) x 100%
Average value of Gallery rea= 650lux
DF = (600/20000) x 100%
= 3%
According to MS1525, average daylight factor of 3-5% have good daylighting condition. The study area
with the daylight factor of 3% provides an adequate lit space which does not cause glare.

2.2 Artificial Lighting

Figure 2 Floor plan of Study Area

The selected artificial lighting space is the study area located on the second floor of the library. At night,
the study area relies solely on artificial lightings for the exhibition purposes.

2.3 PS/ALI system

The Quiet study area is a space where natural daylighting and artificial lightings are installed to be utilized
during the day and night.

At night, the artificial lightings are turned on to brighten up the interior spacing of the study area. The
artificial lights illuminates equally as shown in figure 4 above.

During the day, only the middle section of the artificial lights are turned on and the lights near the entrance
and the curtain wall are turned off as natural daylighting illuminates the space from the entrance and the
curtain wall glasses.

3.0 Acoustics
3.1 External Noise Source

Figure 6 Bookstore plan

The space selected for the analysis of external noise source is the bookstore located on the ground floor
where it faces the main road with the highest noise.
Bookstore
l= traffic noise = 70dB
Intensity: 70 = 10 log (I/Io)
Log (I/1x10-12) = 7.0
l= 1x 10
Activity noise
I= activity noise = 30db
Intensity: 30 = 10 log (l/io)
Log(I/1x10-12)= 3

l = 1x 10
Total intensity l = 1x10 + 1x 10
= 1x10
SPL= 10 log (1x 10 / 1x 10 )
= 70dB
The external noise with a combined SPL of 70dB generated from the vehicles and street activity travels
into the bookstore. The SPL of the external source does not meet the requirement of a bookstores SPL
requirement which is 45dB according to ANSI. Therefore, the Curtain wall is used as a treatment to the
problem of the noise. The transparency also provides good lighting into the bookstore for readers to
view books on the shelves.
3.2 Reverberation time

Figure 7 Librarians Ofiice Plan

Room height = 4.86m
Standard reverberation time for office = 0.8 - 1.2s
Peak hour capacity = 10
Volume of office = (5.55 x 5.1 x 4.86)m
= 137.56m

Reverberation time (Peak Hour)
RT= (0.16xV)/ A
= (0.16x137.56)/16.4152

The reverberation time for office meeting room during peak hour is 1.34 s. According to Acoustic
Standard ANSI (2002), the optimum reverberation time of the office room during non-peak hour is
<0.8s, hence it can be concluded that it has not meet the requirement.
I suggest to install SuperPhon Wall coverings to reduce the RT of the room.

After installing the SuperPhon wall coverings, the new RT of the space has decreased to 0.8s which meets
the RT requirement of an office room.

SRIoverall = 10 log (1/Tav)
= 10 log(1/8.23x10 )
=30.84dB
From the calculations above, 30.84dB of noise level can be reduce during transmission from the
Computer space to the Gallery. Therefore, the Computer space noise (65dB) during peak hour, is
reduced by 30.84dB during transmission, resulting in a sound level of 34.16dB when it reaches the
interior of the Gallery. 29.23dB is within the range 48dBof recommend level for an exhibition space.
Hence, acoustical comfort can be achieved by having walls as sound barriers.
