Romance and Marriage

William and Rose met in the early 1930s and began a courtship. By Christmas 1931, William referred to Rose as his "future wife" in cards he sent her. They married in 1933 at St Andrews Church in Poplar. Their first child, Irene, was born later that year. In 1937, William and Rose sought to buy their first home to leave their rental in Forest Gate. They purchased a home at 56 Brackley Square in Woodford Green in 1938 after initially placing deposits on another property that fell through. William and Rose were proud to own their first home and furnish it together.

Romance and Marriage

Where and how William and Rose met is not

clear, although it is thought they were
introduced by friends Hilda and John, but a
loving courtship would end in them getting
married at St Andrews Church, Poplar, on
January 7th 1933 after banns were published
on November 23rd.

Rose and William started courting around

1930/31 judging by the hand made cards
William would send to Rose at time of
birthdays and Christmas, it would appear that
William had set his heart on making Rose his wife early on in their relationship

Christmas 1931 – ‘To Rose my present darling from Will xxxxxx

your future husband xxxxxx’. Rose was clearly smitten too and
each card was carefully wrapped and stayed in her possession to the
end. A birthday message continues ‘To my darling Rose. Your
future – From Will xxxxxx’. William also underlined some of the
message in the card ‘……. Prove true throughout the coming year’.

By the time their first child was born, Irene, William had established
his own business and they were renting 269 Katherine Rd, Forest
Gate. Irene Rose was born at 26 Howards Road, Plaistow on, October
20th 1933. Irene went on to marry Norman Victor Pearce at St
Barnabas Church, Woodford, Essex on March 27th 1954.

Rose was sure she wasn't going to live in the East End of London for
too long. During one walk, with Irene in the pushchair, some one came
up behind her and punched her hard in the back, it winded her and
made her feel bad. It was a case of mistaken identity, but all the same
would have endorsed her decision to leave the East End.

William and Rose rented a house, 269 Katherine Rd, Forest Gate, West
Ham but had set their sights on buying their own home. In 1937 they
began looking at houses in Woodford Green, Essex and at auction on
September 14th placed a £1 deposit with William Worthy Ltd
(Auctioneers and Surveyors) for 60 Brackley Square, Woodford Green
which was valued at £625. In order to save money to buy their first
home they moved back in with William's parents at 43 Plaistow park Road (the mortgage offer
for 60 Brackley Square was addressed to Mr W.S. Hayward at that address). Williams sister
Alice and her future husband Bill also moved in with their parents at Plaistow Park Road.

William received an offer from the mortgage company on 60 Brackley Square (Offer letter
dated September 11th 1937) subject to ‘approved guarantee’ and ‘Satisfactory survey report’.
The offer was for £590 at 4½% payable by monthly instalments of £3, 6s,4d.
What problems arose with 60 Brackley Square is not known but they returned to the auctions
in February 1938 and placed a deposit of £34 on 56 Brackley Square. The mortgage with the
Leicester Permanent Building Society was finally completed on May 2 nd 1938 by which time
they had already moved in.

Both William and Rose were very proud of there first home,
Rose referring to it as 'heaven' (It was a distance away from her
father)

“We moved in with our beds, a few bits and pieces and
contributions from Lydia including a beautiful oak dining table
and chairs. This stayed with the home until William and Rose
moved to their home in Cuffley, Hertfordshire, their last home
together, some many years later. During the future years things
improved and the house was furnished slowly. Rose saved her
Co-op Divi and I went with her to Ilford, Essex to a store where
she purchased, with her Divi, the first three piece suite with
leatherette covering – very posh!.” [Irene]
