Intro To Instruments Lesson

SUBJECT: Arts Ed. GRADE: Kindergarten

TOPIC: Introduction to Instruments

FOUNDATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Students will:
- Develop an awareness of loud/soft sounds in speech, music, and the environment
- Experiment with the voice and instruments by creating and imitating sounds
- Experiment with a variety of simple found objects and selected instruments
- With teacher support, make basic decisions about an idea and the sounds or
instruments to be used in creating a music expression.

SWBAT:
- Used instruments in a respectful way to create loud and soft sounds.
- Play the instruments together as a group (on a beat)
- Learn the signals as when to play and when not to play (staying together – unison)

MATERIALS AND AIDS


- A variety of instruments

Advanced Preparation (if needed):


- Set out instruments at desks so that each student’s has one. Give the less noisy
instruments to the students who are very enthusiastic to keep the noise level down.

SET:
- Have the instruments sitting on the student’s desk. Explain to the students that each
of them will become experts on their instruments at the story area.
- Establish a stop playing signal and play signal with the students before they have
their instruments in their hands.

DEVELOPMENT:
- Have the students go to their desks and experiment with the instruments for 2-3 mins
- Use the stop signal. Have volunteers stand up and demo their instruments sound.
- Have the students describe the sound and compare the instruments appearances.

CLOSURE:
- If time, have the students attempt to play their instruments together as a group in
unison.

EVALUATION
- Due to the fact that this is the first lesson, evaluation will revolve around
participation and listening skills as new directions and signals are being introduced.
- Off task behavior will be recorded in the Data Collection section.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
- Classroom management techniques in regards to the instruments will be stressed at
the beginning of the lesson due to the fact that the students have not played the
instruments before.
- A stop signal (clap pattern) will be established and practiced before students pick up
their instruments.

ADAPTIVE DIMENSION
- For students who need a demonstration as to how to use the instrument (specifically
Talha), the teacher will be demonstrating how to use each instrument after the
student has had a chance to explore it by themselves and show the class.

STEPS TO ACHIEVE TARGET


- I will be introducing instruments to the students which they have never used before
in class. This will be engaging for them due to the fact that we will be working with
different materials.
- Students will become experts on their instrument and show the class what they have
discovered which will not only excites them to show their instrument but also will
keep them engaged because students who are sitting quietly and properly get to
share first.

DATA COLLECTION:

1. Please record any off task behavior (student’s name and behavior) that occurs
throughout the lesson.

2. Please providing a running record of student’s engagement throughout the lesson.
