The document summarizes the development of the Boehm flute. It describes how Theobald Boehm, a German flutist and goldsmith, sought to redesign the traditional flute by placing finger holes where they fell naturally under the fingers, rather than for acoustic reasons. His 1832 design introduced an open-holed system that allowed natural finger movement between D and B. This Boehm flute design was met with success after demonstrations in Munich, Paris, and London in 1832. Over subsequent years, other instrument makers continued refining the Boehm flute design. By the 1850s, it had become the dominant flute design used by professional musicians.

This lead to the open-keyed system. o Under the open keyed system, the fingers were not required to move out of their natural positions for any notes between d and b.
