Boehm Flute Presentation

The document summarizes the development of the Boehm flute. It describes how Theobald Boehm, a German flutist and goldsmith, sought to redesign the traditional flute by placing finger holes where they fell naturally under the fingers, rather than for acoustic reasons. His 1832 design introduced an open-holed system that allowed natural finger movement between D and B. This Boehm flute design was met with success after demonstrations in Munich, Paris, and London in 1832. Over subsequent years, other instrument makers continued refining the Boehm flute design. By the 1850s, it had become the dominant flute design used by professional musicians.

o

Flutist was divided into two categories

o 1st) traditional fingering system. 2nd) a fresh start with hole for each
semitone (Boehm)
Who was Theobald Boehm
o Munich flutist and goldsmith.
o Made flute as a side job in the 1820s.
o Opened a flute making factory in 1828.
o He toured Europe as a flutist, but was in competition with English
virtuoso Charles Nicholson
o Boehm concluded the principal defect of the simple system flute was
1) indifference to acoustical principles 2) Finger holes were placed
where the fingers could reach them 3)
Boehm 3 earlier inventions in redesigning the flute
o Large tone hole
o Covering the holes with keys to enable the fingers to control distant
hole
o Ring key like those invented by Reverend Nolan
Boehm first design in 1831
o Only two changes to the flute.
o The left hand fingering remained the same, but the A hold was brought
down
o Right hand E, F, F#, and G key were respaced farther down the tube
o We should noted that the new F-F# device destroy the primary D major
scale
Boehm 1832 design
o Experiment with tone hole measurement. This lead to the open-keyed
system.
o Under the open keyed system, the fingers were not required to move
out of their natural positions for any notes between d and b.
Compare and Contrast the 1831 and 1832 Boehm model flute

Introduction of the Boehm flute

o Munich concerts in November 1832 (Paris and London)
o Only London flutist brought it
o Caught on in Paris after Paul Camus (first flute of the Opera Italien) and
this collegues helped adiversate it.
Contribution to the Boehm flute
o Auguste Buffet : moved the axles to the inner side
o Victor Coche: reinstated the closed G# (didnt catch on). But the
addition of a trill key for C# and D# in the second and third octaves did
o Vincent Dorus: a new type of G# key
By 1838, it was officially introduced to the Paris Conservatoire
o London flutist Cornelius Ward and Signor Folz adopted the Boehm flute
o John Clinton (Royal Academy) and Richard Carte and George Rudall
adopted in 1841.
Final Modifications

Boehm studied classical acoustics with Dr. Carl von Schafhautl

Concluded that a cylindrical tube was far more conducive to the
production of the harmonic components or partials of the flute tone
o Also reconsidered the size and shape of the embouchure hole
Rectangular shape with rounded corners > oval or round hole
Relationship between bore and tone holes on a geometrical diagram called a
Schema : Show picture of this
Choice of material in 1847
o Metal tubes in 46, silver and brass tubes produced the best tone
o Concluded that his new silver flute was clearly superior to this earlier
wood ones
Boehm sold rights to English Rudall and Rose of London and French rights to
Louis Lot of Paris.
o Louis Lot
Reintroduced perforated keys, opeining the centers of the A, G,
F#, E, and D key which became known as the open hole or
French model flute.
1850 Giulio Briccialdi introduced the second thumb level above the B key
Boehm flute quickly became popular with proessional players in both France
and England
Manufactored in the US in 1851
