Network Design - Assignment - 3

This document discusses throughput calculations for different types of 8x8 packet switches. It asks the reader to: 1) Calculate throughput of a crossbar switch with 0.7 input load. 2) Draw the topology of an 8x8 Banyan switch and calculate its packet loss probability at 0.7 input load. 3) Show the internal paths of 4 sample packets in a Banyan switch and how contention is resolved. 4) Identify which of the 4 packets would be switched in the current round for an 8x8 Batcher-Banyan switch.

Assignment 3

Consider an 8 8 packet switch. Assume the incoming traffic is i.i.d. (independent

and identically distributed). Throughput is referring to the per output port throughput.
a) If the switch is a cross-bar switch, what is the throughput if the input traffic
load is 0.7? Assume there is no input buffering.
[10 marks]
Answer:
For 8x8 crossbar switch
Inputs (N) = 8
Input probability (P0) = 0.7
Throughput = (1-e-p0)

b) Now let the 8 8 switch be a Banyan switch. No input or internal buffering

included.
i)

Draw the Banyan switch topology.

Answer:

ii)

What is the packet loss probability of this Banyan switch if the

input traffic load is 0.7?

Answer:

iii)

Label the input and output ports from 0 to 7 (uppermost as port

0). Four packets arrive to the input side: packet 1 at input port 2,
destined to output port 1; packet 2 at input port 4, destined to output
port3; packet 3 arrives at input port 5, destined to output port 1; packet 4
at input port 7, destined to output port 0. Please show the internal paths
taken by these four packets. If contention occurs at one switch module,
the packet from the lower input port of the switch module will win.

Answer:
c) Now assume it is a Batcher-Banyan switch. Consider four incoming packets
described in part b iii). Which packets will be switched to the output side in
current operation round? Justify your answer.
