SITUATIONAL WRITING Choosing from suggestions

Introduction:
- Situational writing is nowadays trend towards having to select a
suggestion out of a list of 2 or 3 suggestions and persuade the
audience to accept your point of view
- It can be found in report/proposal, speech, informal writing, formal
writing (e.g. to principal) and some others.
- Have an intro, body (where the bulk is) and conclusion.
- Do planning before you begin on situational.
A. CRITERIA-BASED Writings (criteria given)
-

If given criteria (e.g. principal concern about safety of camp), each

criteria is written as 1 paragraph (ie. 1 para on safety).
In the paragraph of criteria, write a bulk about the chosen suggestion, a
few about the next suggestion and a few about the following
suggestion (provided the suggestions relate to criteria).
Do add in more paragraphs if there are other things to address stated
in the question.
If no other things to address and only criteria, the criteria paragraphs
must be long to sustain writing.
Remember, task fulfillment!
Also add other paragraphs to ensure writing flows.
Write as though you know all the in-and-outs.

Re: Recommendation of event for school anniversary
Having reviewed and evaluated the three events, I have concluded that the
Open House Afternoon Delight is the best choice to commemorate our
schools fiftieth anniversary.
The open house will add a commemorative value to the celebration. It allows
students, teachers and parents to come together to celebrate our fifty years of
hard work and achievements. The inclusion of a Stories from Our Past booth,
which displays pictures and memorabilia, short video clips of the schools
highlights dating back to 1965 and a school tour will allow the alumni to
reminisce the good old days. The one-hour speech segment also befits the
occasion since the guest-of-honour, Mr Benedict Lee, an ex-student and
prominent eye surgeon, will be invited to speak about his school days, making
it a very intimate affair for all of us. Without a doubt, the open house
celebrates the support, success stories and accomplishments of our students
and school community.
The open house is also recommended for its potentially strong student
participation. Each class could be tasked with a specific responsibility, for
example, setting up the booth. Another could be in charge of food. On the
whole, each class and student can be involved in one way or the other, giving
each student a sense of belonging and involvement in the celebration. No
doubt, a school concert or drama night showcases out students talents, but
both events limit participation as only the band, choir or drama club members
are involved. Since this is an occasion for everyone, every student should be
involved in one way or another as far as possible.
The open house is unquestioningly the most practical consideration. It
requires much less time commitment than the other two events, which involve
highly time-consuming rehearsals and practice for the members involved.
There is no reason why we should make certain groups commit more time
than the rest of the students for a celebration which should include everyone.
Admittedly, the school concert or drama night will be a glamorous event and
students might be drawn to the glamour factor, but I am of the view that this
occasion is not so much about glamour as the bringing together of a strong
community that has worked together for the past fifty years.
In summary, I strongly recommend that we opt for the open house as it aptly
marks a celebration of a golden era for us for its elements of nostalgia,
meaningful interactions and collected efforts of both teachers and students.

B. SUGGESTION-BASED Writings (No given criteria)

-

If not given criteria, each suggestion is written as 1 paragraph (e.g. 1

para on having commemorative book)
(Generally, same tips as Criteria-Based Writings)

Model Writing (Speech)

(Suggestions: Video DVD, Commemorative Book & Car Decal)
Dear teachers and fellow students, as you know, this year marks out
graduation for this year, certainly a great milestone in our lives. I forsee that
each of us will have our own journeys to make. Most of us will be in
Singapore, a handful will go overseas for a brief period or even maybe for
good. The idea of a commemorative item to celebrate this graduation is most
timely and appropriate. In fact, this idea came from our principal and I have
been privileged to be tasked as chairperson of the committee to work on this
project.
From an initial survey, 3 suggestions have been received: Firstly, a
commemorative book. Secondly, a video DVD and lastly Car Decal and Tshirt.
After much deliberation, the committee strongly feel that the video DVD
seems the best option. Let me tell you why. The DVD can be easily produced
and we have the full support and expertise of our AV Club for producing this
item. The DVD is meaningful because it presents an animated recording of
activities of the class and individuals including teachers. Cost wise, I was told
by the AV Club that the cost will only be very minimum. Furthermore, the DVD
as an item is light and can be easily handled for example for those travelling
abroad, they can just slip the DVD into the luggage.
On the comparative note, the commemorative book is bulky. Reading does
not appeal to everyone and it is costly to produce. If we have the editorial,
then its alright. If not, we need to find editorial consultants who charge hefty
professional fees. Again, the commemorative book needs proper care. If
poorly handled, it could be stained, torn or attacked by silver fish or termites.
As regards to the car Decal, the committee strongly feel this is not much of an
option. In Singapore today, not many people own or use cars. So, the car
decals do not serve a purpose. Even then, with use under long hours of
exposure to the elements, the decal could tear and spoil rather easily.
Concerning T-shirts, the production is rather complex if we look into different
colours, designs and sizes. Again, the T-Shirt like any other attire cannot
stand to washing and wear and tear.
So all said and done, these items hold no commemorative values.
Before I end, I seek your utmost support, my fellow students, as we proceed
with the DVD as the most workable commemorative item for us to remember
