2) The value of Royce Companys computer equipment is decreasing in value according to

the following function.

y 4000 0.87 x
In the equation, x is the number of years that have elapsed since the equipment was
purchased and y is the value in dollars. How many whole years will it take before the
equipment is worth less than $2500?

a. Construct an accurate sketch of the function

b. On the same graph, construct an accurate sketch of its inverse function.

c. Describe the following transformations that occur in our function:

g x 3 2 x 1 2

g x
.
d. Determine the inverse of

e. How do the transformations of the inverse compare to the transformations of

HW 4 Functions and Regression

1) Jack planted a mysterious bean just outside his kitchen window. It immediately
sprouted 2.56 cm above the ground. Jack kept a careful log of the plants growth. He
measured the height of the plant each day at 8am and recorded this data.

a. Define variables and determine an exponential equation for this pattern. If the pattern
were to continue, what would be the height on the fifth morning, at 8am?

b. Jacks younger brother measured the plant at 8pm on the evening of the third day
and found it to be about 63.25 cm tall. Show how to find this value mathematically.

c. Find the height of the sprout at 12noon on the sixth day.

d. Find the day and hour at which the sprout has doubled in height.

e. Find the day and hour when the plant reaches a height of 1km.
2. The wind speed (in miles per hour) near the center of a tornado is related to the
distance (in miles) the tornado travels. The following chart is a list of known wind speeds
and distances.

a. The large tornado that hit Sanford, and trekked through North Carolina in April 2011
stayed on the ground for 63 miles. What is its estimated wind speed according to a
logarithmic regression?

b. Based on this regression, what would be the distance the tornado travels if it has a
wind speed of 157?

HW 5 Application of Exponential Functions

1) The atmospheric pressure (in millibars) at a given altitude x, in meters, can be
approximated by the following function. The function is valid for values of x between 0
and 10,000.

f x 10381.000134 x
a. What is the pressure at sea level?

b. The McDonalds Observatory in Texas is at an altitude of 2000 meters. What is the

approximate atmospheric pressure there?

c. As altitude increases, what happens to atmospheric pressure?

2) When doctors prescribe medication, they have to consider the rate at which the body
filters a drug from the bloodstream. Suppose it takes the human body 6 days to filter out
half of the Flu-B-Gone vaccine. The amount of Flu-B-Gone vaccine remaining in the
bloodstream x hours after an injection is given by the equation
the initial amount. Suppose a doctor injects a patient with 20
Gone.
a. How much of the vaccine will remain after 1 day?

b. How much of the vaccine will remain after 12 days?

y y 0 0.5

, where

y0

is

(micrograms) of Flu-B-

c. After how many days will the amount of vaccine be less than 1

d. Express the meaning of the number 6 in the equation.

If the present value of my investment is $1,000 and the rate of interest is 6% compounded
annually, what will the value be after 10 years?
3)

HW 6 Applications of Logarithmic Functions

1) The Richter scale is used for measuring the magnitude of an earthquake. The Richter
magnitude is given by

R 0.67 log 0.37 E 1.46

, where E is the energy (in kilowatt-hours)

released by the earthquake.

a. If an earthquake releases 15,500,000,000 kilowatt-hours of energy, what is the

earthquakes magnitude?

b. How many kilowatt-hours of energy would an earthquake have to release in order to be

an 8.5 on the Richter scale?
c. The largest earthquake in North Carolina happened on February 21, 1916. Explore
online to determine its magnitude and use the scale to determine the number of
kilowatt-hours released.

2) Newtons Law of Cooling describes the way the temperature of objects adjust to the
ambient temperature over time. This relationship is an exponential function. Let

H t 93 0.91 68
t

describe the temperature of a beverage (in degrees F) t minutes after a

Dunkin Donuts employee hands it to you.

a. Is the beverage hot coffee or iced coffee? How can you tell by looking at the equation?

b. Sketch a rough graph of

H t

. [Be mindful of your x-axis (or t-axis in this case) where

should it start?]

c. What will be the temperature of the coffee after 10 minutes?

d. Exactly when will the temperature of the coffee reach

90

, a good temperature to drink

coffee at?

e. Exactly when will the temperature of the coffee reach

75

, the temperature at which it

starts to get too cold to enjoy?

3) How much would you need to invest now, to get $10,000 in 10 years at 8% interest
rate if compounded continual?

Suppose $500 is invested at 6% annual interest compounded twice a year? When will the
investment be worth $1000?
