CEI 213:
IRRIGATION SYSTEMS & NETWORKS
SPRING FALL 2016
A stream valley contains 34500 feddans of irrigable land. It is estimated that this
will be planted as follows:
Crop
Area (feddans) Consumptive use (feddan-cm/feddan)
Crop 1
6600
25
Crop 2
11000
50
Crop 3
9000
40
Crop 4
2500
28
Crop 5
5400
100
If the average annual precipitation on the valley is 50 cm, of which approximately
30 cm is available for crops, what quantity of irrigation water must be applied
annually?
3)
A canal reach is 8 km long and 20 m wide. The average input discharge to this
reach during a day is 32 m3/sec, and the output flow is 10 m3/sec. Evaporation
losses from the canal surface are estimated at 11 mm/day. This reach of the canal
serves seven distributaries. Each distributary has a discharge of 3 m3/sec. Estimate
the average daily leakage losses of this reach.
4)
A dam is constructed on a river to control its water for irrigation purpose. The
surface area of the lake (reservoir) is 100 km2. During certain month, evaporation
losses of the reservoir are found 8 mm/day, inflow to the reservoir is 52 million
m3/month, average out flow is 22 million m3/month, and the total rainfall is 80 mm.
The change in storage during this month is 1000 hectar-m.
a) Calculate the change in water depth of the reservoir.
b) Estimate seepage losses (in hectar-m) of the reservoir
5)
A canal serves an area of 22,000 feddans. Average water duty for the cropping
pattern is 10 mm/day. Moreover, the end of this reach is needed to irrigate an area
of 16,000 feddans with 9 mm/day water duty. The conveyance losses are 20 % of
the field water. Find the design discharge of the canal.
6)
A watershed, which has an area of 2.5 km2, has the following hydrologic weekly data:
Precipitation
= 150 mm/week
Evaporation
= 30 mm/week
Infiltration to ground water = 40 mm/week
It is required to estimate the following:
o Precipitation volume
o Evaporation volume from a pan of diameter 1.22 meter placed in a nearby area,
if the pan coefficient is 0.6.
o Volume of runoff water (m3)
o Total loss of water that is not contributing to the stream flow
o If the resulting runoff water is discharged into a stream which has an average
width of 10 meters and water depth is 1 meter, determine the average water
velocity
