Course Objective:
The objective of the course is to
Develop fundamental knowledge of communication principles and data communication
technology.
Introduce basic concepts of Internet, TCP/IP model and network security.
Unit 1

Fundamentals of Digital Data Communication: Basic idea of data transmission, transmission
characteristics, asynchronous and synchronous transmission, basic terms and concepts such as
messages, headers, codes, sessions etc..
Unit 2

Network Components and Transmission Paths: Introduction, LAN Hardware, LAN Operating
Systems, Transmission Media: Guided Media(Twisted-wire pairs, Co-axial cables, Optical fiber);
Unguided Media (Radio, VHF, microwave, satellite, Infrared); Fiber Optics Communication
Components (Source, Channel Detector), factors contributing to errors in transmission, transmission
impairments.
Unit 3

Modems and Switching Technologies: Modulation and Switching Techniques, multilevel
transmission, low baud modems, advances in modems, broadband modems such as cable modem,
DSL modem, interface standards of modems, circuit switching, message switching, and packet
switching, virtual circuit switching techniques.
Unit 4

Multiplexing Techniques: Concept, types TDM, FDM. Multiplexed common carrier systems,
multiplexing satellite signals, concentrators. Introduction to Access Techniques (STDM, FDMA,
TDMA, Spread Spectrum techniques and CDMA, DSSS, FHSS).

Data Link Controls: Data accountability and line control, classification of data link controls:
Message format, link control method, error detection and correction methods check sum and CRC,
flow control, HDLC specifications.

Network Architectures: ISO Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, functions of all layers,
Local Area Networks (LANs), LAN protocols, LAN standards such as Ethernet, Token Ring, Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth, Introduction to Internet architecture and protocols.

Channel error detection and correction, MAC protocols, Ethernet and WLAN.
