HISTORY

Peter was born to a local pastor in 1930 in

Barossa village. He was a young boy when his
father passed away. At an early age, he
started working at Yalumba wines as an
apprentice where he learned winemaking in
1947. After working there for 12 years he
joined at Saltram winery in Barossa as a
Winemaker. There he played a key role
establishing Saltrams name in red wines.
In 1975, with the introduction of white fruity
wines in the market, market for red wines
took a hit. Peter understood this and came up
with white wines in Saltrams portfolio.
In 1978, he was forced to stop the buying of
fruit from the growers and cancel the deals
which he had made earlier. Realizing that it will
be a huge blow for the growers, he decided to
help them by processing their fruit at Saltram
and selling them to other wineries. After getting
a nod by Saltrams owners, he started working
at a side-project with the name Masterson,
helping growers to process their yield on site.
But very soon Saltram was sold and all the
operations came to a stop. Keepng in mind
that livelihood is at stake of more than sixty
family growers, Peter build a winery in
collaboration with the growers and the brand
was born.
Today, the winery is moving toward
sustainable practices. Winery takes great care
to reduce any negative impact on the
environment during all the stages of
winemaking. Most of the water used is
reprocessed for cleaning machinery. The
by-product from wastewater treatment plant
is used to provide nourishment to the soil of
the vineyard. Peter Lehmann wines bottles using
recycled glass and cork made from renewable
materials. Ammonia is used as a refrigerant in
place of CFCs. PLW is also working with South
Australian Environment Protection Authority,
Winery Engineers Association & Interlab
Group, South Australian Wine Industry
Association and SA Water.
Peter Lehmann wine brand is now a part of
the Casella wines of Australia. Its acquisition
was completed on 19 December 2014.
