The leaves are most important organ of the plant body, because they manufacture food for
the plant
In addition of performing the function of food manufacture, leaves carry out many ore
functions
To perform variety of functions, leaves show various modifications

Parts of Leaf:
Leaf blade or Lamina Most expanded part of the leaf
Leaf tip End of the leaf
Petiole The part of the leaf by which it is attached to the stem
Margin Is rim or the final limit of the blade
Midrib Middle pipe like thing which runs along the axis of the leaf
Veins Network of the small pipes which covers entire lamina or leaf
blade

Types of leaf:
Based on the arrangement of leaves on the stem
Alternate leaf attachments are singular at nodes, and leaves
alternate direction, to a greater or lesser degree, along the stem.

Opposite Two structures, one on each opposite side of the stem,

typically leaves, branches, or flower parts. Leaf attachments are
paired at each node

Whorled three or more leaves attach at each point or node

on the stem. Opposite leaves may appear whorled near the tip
of the stem.

Rosulate leaves form a rosette. The rosette arrangement of

the leaves with all the leaves at single height

So there are four types based on leaf arrangement on the twig

Types based on the divisions of the blade

A simple leaf has an undivided blade
A compound leaf has a fully subdivided blade, each leaflet of the blade separated along a
main or secondary vein

Different leaves have different shapes with respect to their tips and margins
Let us study modifications of leaves of plants occurring in different habitats
