The Electromagnetic Spectrum Poster Project

This document provides instructions for an assignment to create a poster about the electromagnetic spectrum. Students must correctly name the types of electromagnetic waves in order; include a picture showing how each wave is used; draw the wavelength of each wave; name the colors in order; and explain how wavelength, frequency, and energy change across the spectrum. The poster must also identify the waves with the longest and shortest wavelengths. The assignment will be graded based on included content, neatness, use of color, and name. Various submission deadlines apply for extra credit or penalties. Alternative project formats are suggested.

Electromagnetic Spectrum Project

Due ____________
S8P4 A. Identify the characteristics of electromagnetic and mechanical waves.

The full range of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation is called the Electromagnetic Spectrum. Each kind of wave is
characterized by a range of wavelengths and frequencies. All of these waves have many useful applications.

Your task is to create an Electromagnetic Spectrum Poster similar to the one on the back. Your poster MUST:
a. Correctly name the electromagnetic spectrum in order. (2 points each, 14 total)
b. Include a picture of how each wave is used in everyday situations. (4 points each, 28 total)
c. Draw the wavelength for each wave. (2 points each, 14 total)
d. Correctly name the colors (in order). (2 points each, 14 total)
e. Explain how each of the following change as you travel across the spectrum: wavelength, frequency, and energy. (6
points each, 18 total)
f. Identify the wave that has the longest wavelength. (2 points)
g. Identify the wave that has the shortest wavelength. (2 points)
Other Factors affecting grade
h. Neatness (0-3 points)
i. Use of color (0-3 points)
j. Name, Period (2 points) 100 Total Possible Points
k. Submitted on or before ______ 5 extra credit points
l. Submitted between ______and ______ 10 points late penalty
m. Submitted after ______ 20 points late penalty

Students have the option of doing the project as described above or modifying the format. Below are some other formats that
can be considered. Students are encouraged to be creative with the project. Student MUST have the required information listed
above in their project. The pictures may be hand-drawn or computer generated.
