Homework Explanation1
Reading: Students need to read at their assigned reading level for 20 minutes a day and
practice at least one comprehension strategies while reading (found on sheet titled what
can I think about while reading). Sign student planner nightly to verify they read, include
comprehension label by signature (found on What can I think about while reading
sheet).
Writing: Weekly kids will do 3 spelling assignments and 1 writing prompt. These assignments
should be done in their homework notebook.
1. Spelling: Use the students spelling words that are stapled in their planner to do 3
activities from the spelling tic tac toe sheet.
2. Writing Prompt: Pick one prompt from the assigned genre brainstorm list.
Students are to use an opening sentence, at least 3-5 detail sentences and a
closing sentence (at least 5-7 sentences total). Check for: capitals, punctuation,
and complete sentence. Please have your child read their response to you to
ensure that it answers the prompt.
2. On Friday, students will turn in their homework notebook (writing and spelling work)
and their planner. They will receive 1 score for the whole week. This will be
recorded on the Friday section of their planner.
Example of a weekly homework score would be 14/14
