Treatment Sheet

This short film treatment proposes exploring gender stereotypes and the concepts of the male gaze and female gaze through a narrative following a male and female character as they prepare for and attend a job interview. The film would use a voiceover narrator to comment on the characters' perspectives from both genders. It would employ split screens and POV shots to illustrate the theories by showing the characters' morning routines and interview from their points of view. The goal is to inform viewers about these issues while telling a story that brings the characters together at the end.

Short Film Treatment

Working Title (this may change later): Gaze

Genres incorporated: Social realism, drama, (informative?)

Primary Target Audience (age, gender, socio-economics, psychographics):

Males and females
Aged 15-18
Socio-economic group B/C1 (middle class/lower-middle class)
Psychographics group of reformers open to new ideas, curious.

Log Line (a snappy description of your story in 2-3 sentences. Like a blurb):
Less of a storyline; more an informative video that aims to inform people about the
male and female gaze theories, whilst also incorporating gender stereotypes. The
narrative will follow the POVs of two main characters; a girl and a boy (17/18 years
old).

Profile of the main character (name, age, gender, any relevant back story that
influences their actions or attitudes in the present):

(Neither the male or female main character has a name, to demonstrate the fact
that people are often objectified, as is the case with the male gaze theory.)

Male character 18 years old.

Female character 17 years old.
Both are looking for a new part-time job to have alongside their studies at
college/sixth form. This is where my two characters will meet in the narrative; at an
office where they are both having an interview for the same job.

Locations:
School hallway and small classroom/office to act as the office location for the job
interview.
Street the characters on their way to the job interview.
Bedroom and bathroom of male character & bedroom and bathroom of female
character where each will wake up and get ready for work.

- Posters for bedroom
Female character:

Breakdown of Plot (think about how your story fits together and why were
watching these characters journeys):
Minute 1 Both characters wake up, showing each of their POV from this point
forward. Male narrator (voiceover) is sarcastic and makes comments
based on the male and female characters POVs and we can hear him
throughout the film.

Minute 2 Both get ready for job interview, and make their way there. Male
character drives, female gets a lift there in car.

Minute 3 In interview. Turns out the interviewer is the same voice as the
narrator and we still hear his perspective.

Minute 4 Male and female characters meet outside the interview room for the
first time, he asks her to go out for coffee.

Minute 5 They both go out together, and the rest is left to the audiences
imagination. Leaves them and cuts to narrator talking to the audience
with examples of the male/female gaze we would have seen in the
film.

Narrative Structure:
Similar to an anachronic narrative, in terms of following two parallel storylines.
However, we will know that they are both real life.

Specific filming and/ or editing techniques you intend to include:

Split screen at some points, to show difference between some things the male and
female characters do (e.g. getting ready for work). This can be where I show more
gender stereotypical factors rather than the male and female gaze theories.

POV shots most of the way through the short film to illustrate theories and put the
audience in the characters position.
