Me601 HW7

1. Derive the equilibrium equations and compatibility conditions for plane stress and plane strain using the Airy stress function approach. 2. Show that the biharmonic equation is obtained from the equilibrium equations and compatibility conditions when there are no body forces. 3. Demonstrate that if a function is harmonic, then its derivative will be biharmonic.

ME 601-Stress Analysis

Homework 7

1. From the equilibrium equations and compatibility condition considering the body
forces( ) acting prove.
a) For plane stress ( ) { }

b) For plane strain ( ) { }

2. From the equilibrium equations and compatibility condition considering the body forces
( ) acting prove (You can directly use the result of previous question if required).
c) For plane stress
d) For plane strain .

Where is the Airy stress function. Assuming no body forces obtain

biharmonic equation.
3. Show that if the function is harmonic, the function will be biharmonic.
4. Using Airy stress function solve for the stresses for a) an infinite plane under uniform tension
and b) an infinite plane with a hole under uniform tension at infinity and c) an Infinite plane with
a hole, under tension in one direction and compression in another orthogonal direction. Also,
show that the stress concentration factor for the case b) is 3 and for the case c) is 4.

a) b)

c)
5. A long composite cylinder is subjected to the external pressure loading as shown. Assuming
idealized perfect bonding between the two materials, the normal stress and displacement will
be continuous across the interface r r1 . Under these conditions, determine the stress and
displacement fields in each material.
6. The cantilever beam shown in the figure is subjected to a distributed shear stress 0 x / l on the
upper face. The following Airy stress function is proposed for this problem
c1 y 2 c2 y 3 c3 y 4 c4 y 5 c5 x 2 c6 x 2 y c7 x 2 y 2 c8 x 2 y 3

Determine the constants and find the stress distribution in the beam. Use resultant force
boundary conditions at the ends.
7. The following stress function
x3 x3 y xy 3 x3 y 3 xy 5
c1 xy c2 c3 c4 c5 c6
6 6 6 9 20
is proposed to solve the problem of a cantilever beam carrying at uniformly varying loading as
shown in the following figure. Explicitly verify that this stress function will satisfy all conditions
on the problem and determine each of the constants and resulting stress field. Use resultant
force boundary conditions at the beam-ends.

8. Consider the Airy stress function c1 x12 c2 x1 x2 c3 x2 2

(a) Verify that it satisfies the biharmonic equation.
(b) Determine the in-plane stresses T11, T12 and T22.
(c) Determine and sketch the tractions on the four rectangular boundaries
x1 0 and b, x2 0 and c .
(d) As a plane strain solution, determine T13, T23, T33 and all the strain components.
(e) As a plane stress solution, determine T13, T23, T33 and all the strain components.
