Problem No. 9 Solution:: Step - 1

This document provides the step-by-step solution to Problem No. 9. The problem involves calculating the moments of inertia and stresses in a beam. The key results are: 1) The first moment of inertia is calculated to be 2521.14 in4. 2) The total moment of inertia is calculated to be 20515.25 in4. 3) The stresses at the top and bottom of the beam are calculated to be 1401.96 psi and 36218.91 psi respectively.

Solution:
Step - 1:

18(x) (x/2) + (2n - 1) As(x - 2.5) = nAs (29 - x)

9x + 17(316) (x - 2.5) = 9(4) (29 - x)

9x + 89.72x 1178.31 = 0

X = 7.49 in

Step - 2:

I1 = bh3/3 = (18) (7.49) 3/3

I1 = 2521.14 in4

I2 = (2n -1) As[r] 2

I2 = 2(9) 1(3.16) [7.49 2.5] 2

I2 = 1337.63 in2

I3 = nAs[r] 2

I3 = 9(4) (29 7.5) 2

I3 = 16656.48

Ier = 20515.25 in4

Step - 3:

fTop = My/ I

fTop = (320 * 1000 * 12 * 7.49) / 20515.25

fTop = 1401.96 psi

fs = n(My / I)

fs = (29 7.5) (9 * 320 * 1000 * 12 * 7.49) / 20515.25

fs = 36218.91 psi

fs = 2nMy / I

fs = (2 * 9 *320 * 1000 * 12 * 5) / 20515.25

fs = 16846.0048 psi
