GAME’S RULES LEVEL 1 & LEVEL 2 Mini- Volleyball Rules Court ‘The correct mini-volleyball court size is 6 m x 12 m, although a badminton doubles court 10x 16 m is ideal. The net is 2 m high although you may vary this to suit the size of the players. Teams ‘Two teams of six players, four on court, rotating, Procedures of play The aim is to attack the opposition. Each side is allowed three passes before the ball has to go over the net. No player is allowed two consecutive touches. Strategy The usual strategy is to use the first two passes to set up a player close to the net so they can leap high and hit the ball down into the opponents’ side (spike) making it difficult to return. To start Toss a coin to decide which team will serve. Serving Serve UNDERARM from behind the service line. (An underarm serve will ensure less service errors and greater chance of rallies as it is easier to receive.) Server must not step over the service line. ‘The ball must not touch the net on service. Loss of service, The ball is served by the other team. (Side out) Rally A rally ends when: 1. The ball lands on the court. 2. A player touches the net. 3. The ball lands out of court. 4. There are more than three touches of the ball by a team before it passes over the net. 5. A player touches the ball consecutively.Scoring and rotation Games ‘A special scoring system is used in mini-volleyball to encourage players to use three hits. A team using three hits immediately prior to winning the rally, is awarded three points, two hits earn two points, and one hit (or just the serve), cams a single point. If the receiving team wins the rally, itis awarded the serve and the points for the rally. When this happens, the players rotate clockwise and a new player serves. ‘A mini-volleyball game is played to 31 points although this can be reduced to 21 or 11 for younger teams.SESSLO:N: 4 MINI-VOLLEYBALL - LEVEL 1 Set Equipment _| 1 Volleyball per pair 12 Markers 1 Badminton size or volleyball court I Warm-Up Smins Elbow Tag © Players in pairs. * Link an elbow with your partner, keeping the outside elbow bent and hand on hip. Divide one pair so that one is ‘IT’ and the other is the ‘runner’. ‘IT’ tries to tag the runner, who can avoid being tagged by hooking elbows with the free elbow of any member of any pair. ‘The runner shouts ‘go’ which means the member of the pair who is nor joined with the runner, has to run to another pair and link elbows, or get caught by ‘IT’. If the runner is tagged before he can join elbows he/she becomes the new ‘IT’. Skill Development SET TIPS 1. Make a window with thumbs and forefingers: other fingers take the shape of the ball. No palms please! 2. Contact the ball in front of face at FOREHEAD height, elbows pointing away from the body (the NEUTRAL position). 3. Bend knees on impact with ball and straighten up to follow through. 4, One foot forward. oO (neureac)3 mins — * In pairs, one underarm tosses the ball to the other, who merely ‘catches’ the ball with the correct hand position. Try this 5 times cach. 3 mins — * In pairs, one ata time the player pushes the ball from the ‘NEUTRAL position into the air and catches it again in the ‘NEUTRAL position. Aim to push the ball as high as possible. HINT: Use the legs to get height * Make sure that when the ball is caught it is NOT touching the palm of the hands. It should touch all of the fingers. 4 mins + Do the same drill, but this time try and speed up the arms and hands so that the ball is not caught. The partner counts how many times the ball can be continuously set 3 mins — + In groups of three. Player (1) uses a two hand underarm toss to the setter (2) who tries to set the ball to player (3). Ensure that the toss is a soft loop allowing the setter to move under the ball. Rotate players after 1 minute. It is best to try and place the setter along a net or wall to get the feel for setting at the net. DKXxXxKD 3m t AXKKKXKA ; Game 12 mins Setting Game ‘As per last activity but combine the groups of three and have player (3) set the ball over the net rather than catch it, The opposing team may catch the set, then toss it to their setter to continue the game. * Encourage the setter (2) to set the ball high on their own side of the net.SESSION 2 MINI-VOLLEYBALL - LEVEL 1 Pass (Dig) Equipment 1 Volleyball per pair (not fully pumped up) 1 Badminton size or volleyball court 12 Markers bx x Smins Line Relay + Teams of 3. * First player holds the ball in the ‘setting’ position, runs forward to the net, turns around and runs back to their team on the base line. Repeat until all players have run xx twice. Ski Development PASS (DIG) TIPS 1. Lay fingers of one hand across palm of the other and thumbs together. 2. Point thumbs to the ground and lock elbows. 3. Bend knees to move towards ball. Straighten legs to follow through. * Players should not swing their arms at the ball but let their legs do the work. 4, Space between arms and body. 3 mins — * Inpairs, one player digs the ball continuously to ~ themselves. The partner counts how many continuous digs are completed. * Ensure that the player uses their legs rather than swing their arms to hit the ball.een ee 4 mins © Inpairs, one player underarm tosses the ball so their partner straightens their legs and digs ball back high Bx xgxxxd a to tosser. BxxkxxxA * Tosser must try to toss ball high and land it slightly in front of digger. 2 eek Sai NET x 6 mins * Inthree’s, one player (1) underarm tosses the ball over the net to the digger (2) who passes the ball to the setter (3) at the net, Let each digger try 10 digs before rotating positions. Count the number of good digs that each player did. *A good dig is one that the setter can catch in NEUTRAL. 4 =o Bi Am x eek 3 DIGGER i Game 12 mins As per setting game but the first contact is now a dig — catch (then set or toss) — set (over the net) — dig — catch ete, Award a point to the team who completes the DIG — CATCH — SET sequence. The team with the most points at the end of time or to reach a certain number of points is the winner. * Get very enthusiastic if a group executes the correct sequence.SESSION 3 MINI-VOLLEYBALL - LEVEL 1 Set/Dig Revision [Equipment — 1 Volleyball per pair 12 Markers 1 Volleyball or badminton size court Warm-Up Smins — Rescue Relay + Teams of 4. Runner 1 runs to the marker and back again to collect Runner 2. Grasping wrists, they both run around the marker and back to collect No. 3. This goes on until the whole team runs around the marker and back together. Repeat relay but as a ‘drop off” relay. Make sure children ‘run’ around and don’t swing each other around the markers. If this, occurs, stop game and redemonstrate, SET REVISION TIPS Ask players to demonstrate the correct hand and arm position in the air without a ball. AXXAXXXA a = af £ In pairs, one partner underarm tosses the ball high and the other catches the ball in the setting position then straightens arms and legs to set the ball high back to their tosser. Try 10 sets each. ALTERNATIVE * If players show they are skilled at this, demonstrate the proper setting action and let them try this such that one partner underarm tosses and other one sets. DIG TIPS 1. Get the children to show you their version of the correct digging position. 2. Keep low, move forward to dig ball. 10 mins BXXX xxx d5 mins ame ‘* In three’s, one player underarm tosses the ball over the net so that the partner can move forward and dig the ball high. Try 10 digs each. How many stayed on your side of the court? 10 mins Head of the Court Use the same groups as the previous activity to form teams of three. Two teams start on the court on either side of the net. Ensure that one player on the team starts at the net as the setter. Remind players that the setter is, their target when they dig. ‘You toss the ball from one side of the court, (but fairly close to the net) to one of the teams. This team must then try the DIG — CATCH (or set) — SET (over the net) sequence. If the team that you toss the ball to wins the rally, they move under the net to the HEAD's side. If the HEAD wins the rally they stay where they are. The losing team moves to the back of the line. Award points only to teams that use the correct DIG—CATCH—SET sequence, whether they win or lose the rally. The winning team is the one with the most points at the end of a time limit. * You should keep all of the balls by your side so you can keep the game going quickly. Ensure that the losing team gets a ball and places it by you before you join the line again. .SESSION 4 MINI-VOLLEYBALL - LEVEL 1 Underarm Serving Equipment 1 Volleyball per pair 6 Markers 1 Volleyball or badminton size court Warm-Up 5 mins — Wheel Relay + Teams of 3. First runner carries the volleyball and runs around the marked area back to the 2nd runner. Repeat until all team members have run. Repeat relay but this time do a ‘grapevine’ step (that is, alternate step in front, step behind) Skill Development | UNDERARM SERVING TIPS 1, Backswing serving arm and slightly release ball. 2. Transfer weight from back to front foot (opposite foot forward to serving hand). 3. Contact ball with heel of hand. RPK 5 mins © Ifawall or fence is available, this practice can be performed into it individually. If not, form a partnership and practise the serve to your partner who is standing on the other side of the court. Perform 10 - serves each. x x x x a xxx XxGame 10 mins Head of the Court (with serving) As per previous session except the HEAD's serves their own ball, 10 mins Head of the Court (without serving) As per previous session except you toss the ball in from the side. For the better teams, toss the ball to a space while for the teams still learning how to dig, toss the ball to the players. * 1. Keep legs bent and ready to move. 2. Try and keep ball high when in your own court. 2SESSION 5 MINI-VOLLEYBALL - LEVEL 1 Revision Equipment | 1 Volleyball per pair 6 Markers 1 Volleyball or badminton size court Warm-Up 5 mins Dodge’em * All players in free space on one side of the court, move around dodging other players. When the coach blows the whistle players should stop and show the coach the ‘ready position’, the ‘set’ or the ‘dig’, depending on the coach's command. As the controller of the game you may also call commands of slower, faster, sideways, jump, any action you feel may occur in a volleyball game. Skill Development 10 mins DIG-SET REVISION TIPS 1, Digger should stand on baseline and move forward to catch the ball. 2. Toss ball high to setter. 3. Work all shots through the legs — bend > straighten. * X1 underarm tosses the ball high over the net to fall in front of X2 who is moving forward to catch the ball. X2 underarm tosses the ball high to X3 who sets the ball high in the air, catches it, then rolls it under the net back to X1. The sequence starts again. Swap positions after 5 turns each, ALTERNATIVE: * If the players are coping well, challenge them by X2 bumping to X3 who sets high in the air. * Don't be afraid to change the triplets so the better ability players team up with one another to try the alternative. 13 a x] x Ky xX x x Kuna [xx x, x x xGame 15 mins Head of the Court ‘As per last session. Decide whether to include serving or not, depending on the ability of the group. If they had trouble digging the serves, toss an easy ball from the side to start the rally. . 14
