Science Day5
Science Day5
Group Size: 20-25 Allotted Time 1 hour Grade Level 3rd grade
Learning Targets/Objectives:
The third grade students will recall that all objects they see on the tour is made of matter.
Assessment Scale:
Teacher will identify if students understand that temperature changes with the addition or removal of
heat .
Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites: Understand that observing uses the 5 senses appropriately.
Knowledge of:
Solid Shape and volume do not change, they are fixed.
Liquid Substance that takes the shape of its container and stays the same volume.
Gas Takes the shape of the container and its volume will expand to fill the container.
Key Vocabulary:
Plasma Electrons wander around freely among the nuclei of atoms.
Content/Facts:
Steam or vapor is gas water.
There are two more states or phases that matter can take, but we dont see them much in
everyday life.
Plasma is another state of matter.
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies: Have the book What is the World Made of? By Kathleen
Zoehfeld on the front of the anchor chart easel to grab students attention.
Development/Teaching Approaches
Students will be at the back carpet.
1. First, the teacher will ask what we have been learning about the whole week. Write down some
answers.
2. The teacher will say We talked about the three states of matter solid, liquids and gases. We
also changed the three states of matter by using hot plates. Today, we will discuss more
examples of each of the three states of matter by reading a book and looking at other things.
3. The teacher will begin reading the book. The teacher will emphasize how everything is made
of matter and review how solids are hard and you cant go through them. The teacher will
continue with the discuss of liquids and gases.
4. Then, the students will make a list of solids, liquids and gases. The teacher will have a chart on
the anchor chart paper.
5. The teacher will inform students that they will be taking a tour of the school and recording
things they see on their States of Matter worksheet.
6. For example, under the solids students might see trays in the cafeteria and they will write this
down. Students might also see chocolate milk and place this under liquids.
7. The students will start in the classroom and record examples that can go under any of the
columns. Inform students that they should have a lot of examples under solids, some under
liquids and discuss gases. Ask if anyone remembers examples of gases and record them.
Discuss how plasma is another state of matter but will not be taught in-depth. Also, remind
students that they learned about vapor pressure yesterday and that it is an example of a gas as
well.
8. The students will go with the teacher around the building and outside.
9. They will start in the classroom, then in the hallway, cafeteria, gym and outside.
10. When students arrive back to the classroom, they will get into groups of 3 and discuss the
things they saw.
11. The teacher will go around asking what examples they found.
12. Students will then grab big chart paper and make 3 columns. Then, they will draw pictures
under each column.
13. The teacher will remind students that all the examples they have on their lists are made of
matter.
14. Have students share their chart paper with the class.
Closure/Summarizing Strategies: Then have students share some new things they found that belongs to
one of the three states of matter. Tell them to share with a neighbor. Explain to the students that in the
next science unit they will discuss the water cycle.
Accommodations/Differentiation:
A student that has difficulties with writing can work with a partner on the tour of the school.

2. 20 States of Matter Worksheets
3. 20 pencils
