1 Introduction
1.1 Purpose
This document is designed as a quick reference guide for maintenance
service of the PASOLINK/PASOLINK+ system.

1.2 Reference Manuals


The following list of manuals is recommended to be referenced during

2 Maintenance Overview
2.1.1 Summary

There are two types of Maintenance defined in the PASOLINK/


PASOLINK+ system, namely, preventive (periodic) maintenance
and corrective maintenance. The customer is recommended to
perform preventive maintenance according to the instruction in
Chapter 3 Preventive Maintenance of this manual. Upon
discovery of fault in the system, the customer should follow the
corrective maintenance procedures detailed in Chapter 4
Corrective Maintenance of this document.

2.1.2 Precautions
Danger: Around 43V DC power (Depends on IF cable length) is
superimposed on the center conductor of the coaxial cable
between the IDU and ODU. Connecting a measurement set may
damage that set. Touching the coaxial cable core may cause
electrical shock.

Caution: To protect the internal circuits against electrostatic


discharge, engineers are requested to wear the wristband and
connect it to the frame ground for Electrostatic Protection (ESP)
before detaching the top cover.

(a) Before beginning maintenance, notify the opposite station that


maintenance is about to begin.
(b) After equipment starts-up, allow the equipment to warm up for
at least 30 minutes.
(c) During maintenance, set the IDU to maintenance mode using a
PNMT according to the user manual.
(d) After completing the maintenance operation, restore all
connections to normal.

2.1.3 Test Equipment

The test equipment and special accessories described in Table A


are required for system maintenance. If recommended test
equipment and accessories are not available, equivalents may be
used.

3 Preventive Maintenance
This section describes the maintenance work that should be performed on
a periodical basis in order to maintain the system at its highest quality. It
should be performed by fully qualified personnel to ensure proper
performance of the system and safety at the operation site.

3.1 Frequency of Preventive Maintenance

To ensure continuously satisfactory operation of the system, perform


the preventive maintenance on a timely basis recommended as
follows.

1st: Three (3) months after the start of operation.


2nd: Twelve (12) months after the start of operation.
3rd and after: Every one (1) year.

The customer is recommended to make use of Preventive Maintenance


Checklist from Appendix A of this document for recording purpose.

3.2 Preventive Maintenance Procedures

3.2.1 Radio Equipment

1. Visual inspection. Visually inspect ODU and IDU for surface


damage or abnormal appearance and check looseness of bolts
and nuts. Visually inspect ODU and IDU for surface damage or
abnormal appearance and check looseness of bolts and nuts.

2. Meter reading
a-1) Connect the PNM Terminal (PC) to the LA PORT of the IDU
using RS-232C cable. (In case on PASOLINK)

a-2) Connect the PNM Terminal (PC) to the PNMT PORT of the
IDU using RS-232C cable. (In case on PASOLINK +)

b) Set the PNMT to show ODU monitoring data according to the


procedure in the PNMT user manual.

c) When the system is in normal working condition, result shall


be the values shown in Table B below.

3. Check configurations
a) Check the condition setting of the IDU according to the
procedure in the PNMT user's manual.
b) Confirm if the condition setting is appropriate according to
the site inventory data.
c) The latest configuration file shall be uploaded and stored.
Also, the Equipment Configuration Parameter shall be
recorded and filed as site inventory data record.

Note: A copy of Site Inventory Data Record sheet is provided in


Appendix B.

3.2.2 Aerial Equipment

1. At first perform visual inspection. Visually inspect antenna and


associated mounting structures and Hybrid Combiner (if
applicable) for surface damage or abnormal appearance.

2. Check for loose bolt connections. Make sure that all bolts and
nuts are tightened to the specified torque.

3. Rust prevention
a) Repainting should be carried out every two years to
maintain high corrosion resistance and appearance of the
antenna. However the period may change if rusting or
exfoliation occurs earlier.
b) For antenna, clean first by removing oil and dirt completely
with solvent and then washing with water. Then apply top
coat with ally alkyd enamel diffusive paint (belcoat
No.5500) or equivalent.
c) For hot dip galvanized parts of the steel structure, first
completely remove rust, dirt, etc. on the position causing
exfoliation of plating. Then apply Amercoat No.160 with a
brush or sprayer (Thickness: more than 70 microns)
manufactured by Amercoat (AMERCOAT EUROPE).

Note that more than 70 microns is roughly amount to one


(1) or two (2) times of paint brushing, or two (2) or three (3)
times of paint spraying.

3.2.3 Interface Cables and Connectors

1. At first perform visual inspection. Visually inspect the following


items for surface damage or abnormal appearance.

i) The connectors of jumper cable between ODU and IDU


ii) Jumper cables
iii) Frame ground of ODU
iv) Grounding of feeder
v) IF cable connector
vi) Power supply cable and connector
vii) Traffic IN/OUT cable and connectors
viii) Alarm cable and connectors
ix) Service Channel cables and connector
x) NMS cable and connector

2. Check for loose bolt connections. Make sure that the jumper
coaxial cables between ODU and IDU are firmly fixed, and all
bolts and nuts are tightened.

3. Check waterproof treatment. Check if waterproof treatment is


in good condition on connection point of the jumper coaxial
cable at ODU, splicing points of coaxial cable, and connection
points of grounding cables.

4 Corrective Maintenance
Corrective maintenance covers fault isolation, replacement and alignment.
The fault isolation procedure describes isolating equipment-level faults.
Therefore, if an ODU or IDU is faulty, it should be replaced with a spare
and aligned. During corrective maintenance, carefully observe the
precautions given in Section 2.1.2 of this document until alignment is
completed.

4.1 Corrective Maintenance Procedures

4.1.1 Radio Equipment

1. Confirmation of alarm and / or malfunction

a) Confirmation of alarms, which are identified through:


Red alarm LED indication on the IDU or
Notification from external equipment
During alarm conditions, red alarm LEDs on the IDU are lit
except when there is a power supply failure. Faults can be
isolated using the LED indications. Table C-l provides
information for isolating faults at a station.

b) Confirmation of malfunction using PNMS or PNMT.

2. Identify faulty equipment by observing PNMS and/or alarm


indication on IDU, identify the station and equipment where
alarm and/or malfunction occurred.

3. Prepare necessary test equipment and accessories, PC and


connection cable and Spare Equipment for replacement.

4. Pinpoint the fault equipment as follows.


a) Check individual alarm and status condition of ODU/IDU by
using the PNMT. Refer to the PNMT user's manual for
detailed procedure for monitoring.
b) Pinpoint the origin of fault with help of the instruction
manual of the equipment.
c) If alarm and/or malfunction is due to equipment, go to next
step. If not, go to next step 5.

5. Replacement of.

a) IDU. The Manufacturer does not recommend replacement of


modules within IDU. If a fault is identified with the IDU, the
complete unit should be replaced with a spare. The faulty
unit is to be returned to the factory for repair.

The following actions shall be performed on the new IDU


before connection to ODU.

i) Downloading of the appropriate configuration file*.


*Note: The latest configuration file stored for the
faulty IDU shall be used.
ii) Set the Equipment Configuration for the station
according to the site inventory record. At least, TX/RX
Frequency (CH) TX Attenuation, Bit Rate and Frame ID
shall be set.

When replacing with a new unit, the start up procedure


should be followed. Refer to the equipment instruction
manual for details.

b) ODU. Before replacing the ODU with a spare, the spare


must be set to meet the required functions. Provided here
are procedures for replacing the ODU with spares after fault
isolation and/or presetting.

Removing
i) Turn off the POWER switch on the front panel of the
IDU.
ii) Loosen tightening rings of the IF IN/OUT (N) on the
ODU by turning them counter-clockwise.
iii) For waveguide connector type of ODU, to remove the
waveguide from the RF IN/OUT, remove the four
waveguide fixing screws using a screwdriver.
Note: Be careful not to damage the O-ring between
the waveguide and ODU.
iv) Lessen four screws (M6) on the ODU.
v) Remove the ODU from mounting bracket.
vi) Replace ODU with a spare, taking care when handling
the waveguide contact surface.

Remounting
vii) When H polarization is required, rotate the ODU so as
to go up the plate marked with H.
viii) When V polarization is required, rotate the ODU so as
to go up the plate marked with V.
ix) Confirm if the O-ring is to be placed in the original
position properly.
x) Put new ODU on the mounting bracket and align the
bolts of the ODU with the bolt holes of the mounting
bracket.

xi) Tighten the four screws (M6) on the ODU using a


suitable screwdriver.
xii) Connect coaxial cable between the IF IN/OUT jacks on
the IDU and ODU.
Note: After cable connection, the connector part shall
be wrapped by self-bonding tape for waterproof.
xiii) For waveguide connect type of ODU, connect
waveguide to RF IN//OUT with four screws using a
suitable screwdriver.
xiv) Confirm that the ODU is firmly installed on the
mounting bracket.
xv) Confirm the cable routing and the cable has been
fastened properly.
xvi) Turn on the POWER switch on the front of the IDU.

Note: Allow equipment to warn warm at least several


minutes.

6. Alignment. After replacing ODU or IDU with spares, the ODU or


IDU must be aligned as follows.
Caution: After replacing any unit with a spare, allow equipment
to warm before at least several minutes before alignment.
a) Verify that connector is firmly connected.
b) Turn on the power switch on the IDU.
c) Connect tester (digital multi-meter) to LINE IN (-) and LINE
IN (+) terminals above the power cable unit of the IDU.
Confirm that the meter indication is described in Table C-2.

d) Referring to para. B), confirm that the meter indication is


normal.

e) Referring to the procedure for condition setting of ODU and
IDU described in the equipment instruction manual, perform
radio frequency and TX output power setting for the ODU.

f) Referring to the procedure for condition setting of ODU and
IDU described in the equipment instruction manual, perform
each item setting for the IDU.
g) Connect the PNMT to the LA PORT of the IDU using an RS-
232C cable. (PASOLINK)

g-2) Connect the PNMT to the PNMT port of IDU using an RS-
232C cable (PASOLINK+)

h) Confirm if the Equipment Configuration data stored in the


equipment is appropriate.
i) Record the Equipment Configuration data as a station
inventory data.
j) The faulty ODU and/or IDU shall be returned to the Supplier
for repair.

4.1.2 Aerial Equipment

1. Confirm malfunction. Make sure the observed malfunction is


due aerial equipment.

2. Antenna Orientation. If malfunction is due to drift of antenna


direction, re-orientation of antenna should be performed.
a) At each station, remove the cap from the OW/RX LEV MON
jack on ODU.
b) Connect cables with F-type plug for Digital Multi-meter to
RX LEV MON jack.
c) Adjust azimuth and elevation angle for the antenna
direction alternately so that the voltage measuring value
becomes maximum.
d) Disconnect digital multi-meter from the RX LEV MON jacks.
e) Reconnect the cap removed in step a) above.

Note
In case of PASOLINK+, an Antenna Alignment Mode which extend the range of RX
LEVEL MON is available. The detailed procedure shall be referred as per the
instruction manual of PASOLINK+.

3. Tighten all bolts and nuts to the specified torque. (refer to


installation instruction of antenna).

4. If any rust found, following action should be made.


a) For antenna, clean first by removing oil and dirt completely
with solvent and then washing with water. Then apply top
coat with ally alkyd enamel diffusive paint (belcoat
No.5500) or equivalent.
b) For hot dip galvanized parts of the steel structure, first
completely remove rust, dirt, etc., on the position causing
exfoliation of plating. Then apply Amercoat No.160 with a

5. Replacement. If any surface damage of abnormal appearance


is observed on aerial equipment, it must be replaced with
spare according to owner's decision.

4.1.3 Interface Cables and Connectors

1. Check if there is any malfunction along the interface cables.

2. If any surface damage or abnormal appearance is found on the


following items, replace it with new one according to owner's
decision. Items to be inspected are:
a) The connectors of jumper cable between ODU and IDU
b) Jumper cables
c) Frame ground of ODU
d) Grounding of feeder
e) IF cable connector
f) Power supply cable and connector
g) Traffic IN/OUT cable and connectors
h) Alarm cable and connectors
i) Service channel cables and connector
j) NMS cable and connector

3. If any loose connection found, tighten and make sure all


connections are fixed firmly.

4. If any water ingress or deterioration of waterproof treatment is


found, waterproof treatment by self-bonding tape shall be
replaced with new one.

4.3 List of Alarms


A list of alarms generated by PASOLINK/PASOLINK+ system is
described as follow. The reasons for the alarms and the action to take
to correct the faults are also included. Note that these alarms appear
in the Active Alarm window of the PNMS (PASOLINK Network
Management System) software when faults occur. Numbers (1)
through (20) in the Items to Check column are in reference to
PASOLINK equipment in Figure 1 through 3 at the back of the list.
