Assignment 5

1. Calculate the row spaces and null spaces of the matrix

1 2 3 5
3 4 2 1

and check whether the two subspaces of R4 are orthogonal?

2. Use row operations to simplify and compute the determinants of

101 201 301 1 t t2
102 202 302 , t 1 t
103 203 303 t2 t 1

3. Decompose the the matrix below into the product of a lower triangular and an upper triangular
matrix. Calculate the determinants of all three of them

6 8 7
3 5 9
3 3 4

4. Decompose the following matrix into a product of a lower triangular matrix and its transpose

6 1 3
1 3 1
3 1 5

5. Check whether the matrices in questions 3 and 4 are positive definite or not. State your reasons
clearly.
6. Prove that the product of two lower triangular matrices is lower triangular.
7. There are several cows in MP and Chhatisgarh. Every month 10% of MP cows move to Chhatis-
garh and 20% of Chhatisgarh cows move to MP. If no external factors are involved, what will be
the ratio of the number of cows in Chhatisgarh to that in MP after 100 months?
(Hint: use a property of Markov matrices)
8. Find the vector u(t) that solves the equation

du 3 2
= u,
dt 0 1

given the initial condition u(0) = [2, 2]T .
9. For the matrix A given below, prove that for an integer k

2 1 k 1 1 + 3k 1 3k
A= , A =
1 2 2 1 3k 1 + 3k
