UNIT 3: ENGINEERING PROJECT

PROGRAM: EDEXCEL (ND) ENGINEERING
YEAR: 2014-2015
PROJECT TITLE: LIFTING JACK Hydraulic Jack, from Ice Cream
Sticks

TUTOR: YAKUB IQBAL MOGAL

7 AUGUST 2015
Abstract:
Can you lift a car? No? You say you are not strong enough? True, our bodies are not built to lift
heavy loads like cars. Fortunately, our brains are smart enough to harness the power of fluids,
like water and oil, to create hydraulic lifts. By pushing a button on a hydraulic lift, a mechanic
can easily raise a car with one finger. Lifts can also be used to raise lots of other heavy loads -
even such massive things as steel girders to construct a skyscraper! In this mechanical
engineering project, you will get a firsthand look at the power of a hydraulic system by building
your own working model of a lift

The lifting jacks type FL-N are equipped with a fixed anvil and directly approach the lifting point
of the rail vehicle to lift the load e.g. of subways and trams. The lifting jack type FL-VN is
provided with a movable anvil and is used for heavy railway vehicles. After positioning the
lifting jack, the anvil is horizontally moved to the lifting point of the rail vehicle. With this kind
of construction the clearance gauge of all rail vehicles can be observed.

Jack stands may be the most overlooked safety equipment items in a DIY garage. Jack stands do
not lift vehicles. Instead, they provide a safe, fixed support for a raised vehicle. Use a pair of
jack stands every time you lift a vehicle and you will vastly decrease the likelihood of becoming
a victim of a falling vehicle. Simply jack up the vehicle and lower it onto the jack stand or stands.
When the time comes to remove them, raise the vehicle slightly with a jack, remove the jack
stands and lower the vehicle. Always place wheel chocks before performing work on a raised
vehicle.

1. INTRODUCTION:
Floor Jack, English (Jack) is a lifting height of a small (less than 1m) of the simplest lifting
equipment. It has mechanical and hydraulic two. Mechanical rack and the screw jacks have
two kinds, because from the weight of small, laborious operation, is generally used for
mechanical maintenance work, the process does not apply in building bridges. Hydraulic jack
compact, stable and self-locking effect, it is widely used. The disadvantage is the limited lifting
height, lifting slowly. Jack is mainly used for factories, mines, transportation and other
departments as vehicle repair and other lifting, support and so on. The structure of light, solid,
flexible and reliable, one person can carry and operate. Jack as a wide range of tools to use,
using the highest quality casting materials, ensure the quality and life jack. Mechanical track
jack is the simplest & sturdiest types of the jacks, widely used in Oil Fields, Railway Track Work,
Ship Yards, Mining Operation, and Construction &Heavy Duty Industrial Maintenance &
Establishments. These Track jacks can be used to lifting both on down and up strokes. They
also can be lowered tooth by tooth, and also can be made to trip off by just moving the trip
control. The track jack has simple structure, easily to use safe and reliable. It can be used with
many same jacks.

It is a good tool used widely in many lifting fields. These lifting jacks made of high- strength
light-metal alloy generally operate with the hydraulic re-pressure system at 30 MPa. A
releasable return valve with pressure protection at both.

Ends is mounted on the fixed integrated base, thus ensuring optimum stability. This prevents
the load dropping in the event of hose severance, for example, and optimally protects the
lifting jacks against overload and pressure multiplication. Safe and jerk-free operation is
guaranteed even under full load.
By using piston support pieces and cylinder support rings (support set) it is possible to extend
the stroke of all low-height lifting jacks step by step. Lifting jacks from all series have been
coordinated with each other as regards lifting capacities and closed heights and stroke heights
such that they can be used together without any problems. The high type of jack can continue
with the work as soon as the low type has reached its stroke limits. Series 600, 1000 and 1200
flat-type jacks are available for dealing with extremely low lifting points. With these jacks the
stroke can also be extended by means of support sets. ()

HYDRAULICS: The word hydraulics is based on the Greek word for water, and originally covered
the study of the physical behavior of water at rest and in motion. Use has broadened its
meaning to include the behavior of all liquids, although it is primarily concerned with the
motion of liquids. Hydraulics includes the manner in which liquids act in tanks and pipes, deals
with their properties, and explores ways to take advantage of these properties. Although the
modern development of hydraulics is comparatively recent, the ancients were familiar with
many hydraulic principles and their applications.

The Egyptians and the ancient people of Persia, India, and China conveyed water along
channels for irrigation and domestic purposes, using dams and sluice gates to control the flow.
The ancient Cretans had an elaborate plumbing system. Archimedes studied the laws of floating
and submerged bodies. The Romans constructed aqueducts to carry water to their cities

Torricelli, French physicist, EdmeMariotte, and later, Daniel Bernoulli conducted experiments to
study the elements of force in the discharge of water through small openings in the sides of
tanks and through short pipes. During the same period, Blas Pascal, a French scientist,
discovered the fundamental law for the science of hydraulics. Hydraulic jack is based on the
Pascals law which states that increase in pressure on the surface of a confined fluid is
transmitted undiminished throughout the confined vessel or system.
A jack is a device that uses force to lift heavy loads. The primary mechanism with which force is
applied varies, depending on the specific type of jack, but is typically a screw thread or a
hydraulic cylinder. Jacks can be categorized based on the type of force they employ: mechanical
or hydraulic. Mechanical jacks, such as car jacks and house jacks, lift heavy equipment and are
rated based on lifting capacity (for example, the number of tons they can lift). Hydraulic jacks
tend to be stronger and can lift heavier loads higher, and include bottle jacks and floor jacks.

Unlike bottle jack shafts, the shaft in a floor jacks is horizontalthe shaft pushes on a crank
that connects to a lifting pad, which is then lifted horizontally. Floor jacks typically provide a
greater range of vertical lift than bottle jacks, and are available in two sizes. The original jack is
about four feet long, a foot wide, and weights around 200 poundsthey can lift 4-10 tons. A
more compact model was later made, which is about three feet in length, and can lift 11/2
tons. Although mini jacks are also produced, they are not a recognized standard type of floor
jack. Typically, one of the first two sizes should be used.

Hydraulic jacks and many other technological advancements such as automobile brakes and
dental chairs work on the basis of Pascal's Principle, named for Blaise Pascal, who lived in the
seventeenth century. Basically, the principle states that the pressure in a closed container is the
same at all points. Pressure is described mathematically by a Force divided by Area. Therefore if
you have two cylinders connected together, a small one and a large one, and apply a small
Force to the small cylinder, this would result in a given pressure. By Pascal's Principle, this
pressure would be the same in the larger cylinder, but since the larger cylinder has more area,
the force emitted by the second cylinder would be greater. This is represented by rearranging
the pressure formula P = F/A, to F = PA. The pressure stayed the same in the second cylinder,
but Area was increased, resulting in a larger Force. The greater the differences in the areas of
the cylinders, the greater the potential force output of the big cylinder. A hydraulic jack is
simply two cylinders connected as described above.

The hydraulic jack is a device used for lifting heavy loads by the application of much smaller
force. It is based on Pascals law, which states that intensity of pressure is transmitted equally in
all directions through a mass of fluid at rest.

A hydraulic jack consists of two connected cylinders, one big and one small, where force is
applied to the smaller cylinder that creates equal pressure in both cylinders

2. Literature review:
Hydraulic jacks work based off of Pascal's Principle, which states that pressure is equal
throughout an enclosed container. When force is applied to the small cylinder, the pressure in
the cylinder gets greater. By Pascal's Principle, this means pressure in the larger cylinder gets
greater as well. But, due to its size, the larger cylinder produces a greater force than the smaller
one, allowing for multiplied hydraulic force. This principle can be exploited in hydraulic
machines. Imagine that two syringes of different sizes were connected by tubing and filled with
water.

Hydraulics is used in many applications we see or use every day. The brakes in an automobile or
the lift on the bucket of a tractor are two very common applications. We can experiment with
simple hydraulics using plastic syringes for cylinders and small plastic tubing for the hydraulic
hose. One definition I read for hydraulics was, the movement of pressurized liquids through
confined spaces. Like working with gears, pulleys, or levers; a mechanical advantage can be
realized by using different size cylinders on the end of the hydraulic connections. By trading
distance moved with the amount of force the advantage is realized.

2.1 Hydraulic Jacks Work:

Hydraulic jacks are typically used for shop work, rather than as an emergency jack to be carried
with the vehicle. Use of jacks not designed for a specific vehicle requires more than the usual
care in selecting ground conditions, the jacking point on the vehicle, and to ensure stability
when the jack is extended. Hydraulic jacks are often used to lift elevators in low and medium
rise buildings. A hydraulic jack uses a fluid, which is incompressible, that is forced into a cylinder
by a pump plunger. Oil is used since it is self lubricating and stable. When the plunger pulls
back, it draws oil out of the reservoir through a suction check valve into the pump chamber.
When the plunger moves forward, it pushes the oil through a discharge check valve into the
cylinder. The suction valve ball is within the chamber and opens with each draw of the plunger.
The discharge valve ball is outside the chamber and opens when the oil is pushed into the
cylinder. At this point the suction ball within the chamber is forced shut and oil pressure builds
in the cylinder. In a floor jack (aka 'trolley jack') a horizontal piston pushes on the short end of
a bellcrank, with the long arm providing the vertical motion to a lifting pad, kept horizontal with
a horizontal linkage. Floor jacks usually include castors and wheels, allowing compensation for
the arc taken by the lifting pad. This mechanism provide a low profile when collapsed, for easy
maneuvering underneath the vehicle, while allowing considerable extension. Richard Dudgeon,
Inc. was founded in New York City as a machine shop. In 1851, founder and inventor Richard
Dudgeon was granted a patent for a "portable hydraulic press" - the hydraulic jack, a jack which
proved to be vastly superior to the screw jacks in use at the time.

2.2 Types of Hydraulic:

Pneumatic jack: A pneumatic jack is a hydraulic jack that is actuated by compressed air - for
example, air from a compressor - instead of human work. This eliminates the need for the user
to actuate the hydraulic mechanism, saving effort and potentially increasing speed. Sometimes,
such jacks are also able to be operated by the normal hydraulic actuation method, thereby
retaining functionality, even if a source of compressed air is not available.
Strand jack: A strand jack is a specialized hydraulic jack that grips steel cables; often used in
concert, strand jacks can lift hundreds of tons and are used in engineering and construction.

Farm jack: The farm jack is also known as a Hi-Lift Jack. The farm jack, invented in 1905 consists
of a steel beam with a series of equally spaced holes along its length, and a hand operated
mechanism which can be moved from one end of the beam to the other through the use of a
pair of climbing pins. Typical sizes for the farm jack are 4 feet (1.2 m), 5 feet (1.5 m)and 6 feet
(1.8 m) referring to the length of the beam.

The jack's versatility stems from its use for such applications as lifting, winching, clamping,
pulling and pushing. It is this versatility, along with the long travel it offers and its relative
portability, which make the farm jack so popular with off-road drivers.

Safety standards: National and international standards have been developed to standardize the
safety and performance requirements for jacks and other lifting devices. Selection of the
standard is an agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer, and has some
significance in the design of the jack. In the United States, ASME has developed the Safety
Standard for Portable Automotive Service Equipment, last revised in 2014, including
requirements for hydraulic hand jacks, transmission jacks, emergency tire changing jacks,
service jacks, fork lift jacks, and other lifting devices.

Bottle jack: A bottle jack or whiskey jack is a hydraulic jack which resembles a bottle in shape,
having a cylindrical body and a neck, from which the hydraulic ram emerges. In a bottle jack the
piston is vertical and directly supports a bearing pad that contacts the object being lifted. With
a single action piston the lift is somewhat less than twice the collapsed height of the jack,
making it suitable only for vehicles with a relatively high clearance. For lifting structures such as
houses the hydraulic interconnection of multiple vertical jacks through valves enables the even
distribution of forces while enabling close control of the lift. They have a capacity of up to 50
tons and may be used to lift a variety of objects. Typical uses include the repair of automobiles
and house foundations. Larger, heavy-duty models may be known as a barrel jack.

This type of jack is best used for short vertical lifts. Blocks may be used to repeat the operation
when a greater amount of elevation is required.

3. PROJECT METHODOLOGY:

discharge valve ball is outside the chamber and opens when the oil is pushed into the cylinder.
At this point the suction ball within the chamber is forced shut and oil pressure builds in the
cylinder.

3.1 BRIEF REVIEW:

3.2 PROPOSAL DESCRIPTION:
It is a short stroke hydraulic lift which is fed from hand pump. The hydraulic jack may be
portable. This is extensively used for lifting automobiles usually to facilitate and repair. And for
replacing the punctured wheels. The hydraulic jack is perhaps one of the simplest forms of a
fluid power system. By moving the handle of a small device, an individual can lift a load
weighing several tons. A small initial force exerted on the handle is transmitted by a fluid to a
much larger area. The operation of hydraulic jack depends on Pascals law. This states that
when a fluid is at rest in a closed vessel and if a certain pressure is applied at any point the
pressure will be transmitted equally in all direction. Mechanical advantage is obtained by a
practical application of Pascals law of transmission of fluid pressure. Two pistons of different
sizes operate inside two cylinders suitably connected with a pipe so that pressure in each is the
same. If p is pressure and a1, a2 are the cross sectional area of cylinders, then a force
F applied to the smaller plunger will make available a load W is lifted. Where, p =
pressure of the fluid, a1 = small cylinder area, a2 = larger cylinder area, F = force acting on
smaller plunger, W = load lifted. If the volume of liquid is constant. The displacement of large
piston will be proportionately to smaller plunger.

Hydraulic systems are used in many different types of machines: control surfaces on airplanes,
elevators, automobile lifts, and backhoes. The idea behind a hydraulic system is that force is
applied to one point and is transmitted to a second point using an incompressible fluid. You can
find detailed background information on how hydraulic machines work at How Stuff Works.

3.3 PROJECT SPECIFICATION:

Lifting jack is disclosed for use in lifting automotive vehicles and other heavy objects. The jack
includes a spur gear placed in slots in a guide housing such that the gear extends out of the
guide housing through the slots. A pinion gear located outside the housing engages the spur
gear and is driven by lever means to turn the spur gear.

If you have a business which involves loading and unloading heavy parts, one can understand
the importance of these hydraulic cylinders with ease. An effective hydraulic environment can
do much work for you. A simple example is the car of the hydraulic jack that uses a hydraulic
manipulation of the back door of his car.
Nowadays, you can also find the hydraulic brakes for motorcycles, for a number of forces to the
brake pedal, which leads to a breakdown effectively. Today, two-cylinder and the slave of
modern cars made of cylinders, the other takes over. This ensures greater safety of modern
cars.

3.4 COMPONENTS LIST WITH STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS:

Plastic Flexible Tube: Flexible pipe is characterized by a composite construction of
layers of different materials, which allows large amplitude deflections without adverse effects
on the pipe. This product may be delivered in one continuous length or joined together with
connectors

Needle: a very fine slender piece of polished metal with a point at one end and a hole or eye for
thread at the other, used to make holes in ice-cream sticks.

Copper Wire: Copper wire comes in several different varieties, and if youve never purchased it
before, the differences can seem confusing. Between solid wires, copper braid, stranded copper
and more, this copper wire help the ice-cream sticks through the holes in it.
Ice-Cream Sticks: it use in ice-cream and many kind of chocolates and here it use to make a lazy
tongs of ice-cream stick.

Cardboard: cardboard is a generic term for a heavy-duty paper of various strengths, ranging
from a simple arrangement of a single thick sheet of paper to complex configurations featuring
multiple corrugated and uncorrelated layers.

Two Syringe (5 ml): Syringes work because of a thing called pressure. A syringe is basically a
long plastic tube with a plastic plunger inside that sticks out from one end of the tube and can
slide back and forth through it. The thin metal needle goes on the other end. It basically looks
like this:

4. PROCEDURE:
Water is an incompressible fluid. When pushed through one syringe water transmits the
pressure to the other syringe without getting compressed.

The hydraulic jacks are typically used for heavy loads of life in industrial processes. These
connectors are used to lift cars, while replacing the flat tire. This type of jack is known as Car
Jack, Floor Jack, or Garage Jack. The hydraulic jacks are also used in cranes to lift heavy loads.
Some cranes are equipped with multiple takes that are designed for additional functionality.

Each company has different needs, so that the hydraulic jack can be used as needed basis. You
should always consult an expert, while the installation of these connectors as proper
installation of the plug will give you the desired results.

Even if you install a hydraulic piston must always consider the requirement and the available
space. The installation must be such that it does not consume much space, when the industry
meets the full requirement as well.

4.1 RESOURSES REQUIRED

Since I am only going to research, study and design the system, I will be needing the online
recourses, designing software and MS office for the reports and the presentations purposes.

Get a feel for hydraulic jack. Using two new plastic syringes (minus the needles) and a few ice-
cream sticks you can make a Jack to lift a load. The syringes transit force through the water
medium which is not compressible (at least for the purposes of this toy).

This device demonstrates the concept of Mechanical advantage where you can lift heavy loads
which little effort. Applying small force over larger distances you lift heavy loads for smaller
distance.
4.2 PROBLEMS TO MAKE PROJECT:
Its hard to find Flexible tube in stores

Component Failures.

Copper Wire.

The mentioned problems were later taken care of during the design processes and testing of
this project

4.3 FURTHER Improvement:

However, the project is still not reach full complete functions as it can be improved.
There are many ways to improve the circuit of which includes:
To get big syringe and suitable flexible tubes.
Dont use ice-cream stick cut of pieces of wood and make my own sticks.
Crew is better than copper wire.

4.4 WORKING OF HYDRAULIC JACK:

Hydraulic jack works on the principle of Pascals law. When the handle is operated, the
plunger reciprocates then the oil from the reservoir is sucked into the plunger cylinder during
upward stroke of the plunger through the suction valve. The oil in the plunger cylinder is
delivered into the ram cylinder during the downward stroke of the plunger through the delivery
valve. This pressurized oil lifts the load up, which is placed on top plate of the ram. After the
work is completed the pressure in the ram cylinder is released by unscrewing the lowering
screw thus the pressure releases and the ram is lowered, then the oil is rushed into the
reservoir. It consists of plunger cylinder on one side and ram cylinder on the other side. These
two cylinders are mounted on base which is made of mild steel. Plunger cylinder consists of
plunger which is used to build up the pressure by operating the handle. Plunger cylinder
consists of two non-return valves i.e. one for suction and other for delivery. Ram cylinder
consists of ram which lifts the load. The ram cylinder connected to delivery valve of plunger
cylinder. It is also consists of lowering screw this is nothing but a hand operated valve used for
releasing the pressure in the ram cylinder for get down the load.

5. Conclusion:
This hydraulic lifting Jack are the ideal product to push, pull, lift, lower and position loads of
anything from a couple of grams. The need has long existed for an improved portable jack for
any material. It is lower desirable that a jack become available that can be operated from a
location of safety off the lifting equipment.

My jack worked as it should immediately. The real test is to lift something low weight with the
jack. I left the jack in this position for a few minutes. It did not leak down that I could see. Now I
can use a hammer to tap the metal caps into the holes for the safety overload valve and for the
check valves. I will check the fluid level again after I have used the jack several times. I will also
watch for signs of leakage.

I did not find any clearly damaged seals in my jack, other than cracks in an "O" ring on part of
the release valve, but it was a non-critical part. I did find dirt in the oil. I expect the seals were
just old and less efficient. It feels good to have my jack working again, especially since it once
belonged to my father. Rebuilding a hydraulic floor jack was much more difficult and a lot more
work than I expected from information I had gathered before I began. I found some parts were
not as easy to remove as I expected from videos and other helps that I linked earlier in this
Instruct able, and I had to make several special tools. I first had to develop those in my mind.
Then I had to design them and build them with materials I already had. Fortunately, I have a
welder and was able to do that without too much difficulty.

I can easily understand why many suggest a person ought to simply buy a cheap jack and
replace it with another when it fails. I have a hard time doing that, no matter how much
financial sense it might make, that seems like the waste of a good tool containing numerous
carefully machined parts. An imported floor jack comparable in capacity to mine lists for around
twice the cost of the parts kit I bought, sometimes even less than twice the cost of the parts kit.
I do not know if my Fleet jack will last longer than an import jack.

Knowing all I know now, I might suggest flushing out old jack oil every decade and replacing it
with fresh, clean fluid. Even then, I am not sure draining the old fluid and refilling the jack with
new fluid would have removed all of the dirt I found. Some of it was in places that seemed to
hold the dirty oil in that particular place. The oil in the reservoir had always appeared clear and
clean. Still, neoprene seals used in hydraulic jacks do harden or crack and will fail to seal
properly in time.

Owning and using a hydraulic jack is often a necessity. But, it has costs over time. Those costs
mean the eventual repair or replacement of a jack. If you choose to repair your jack, you have
the option of doing it yourself or of taking it to a shop. If you choose to do it yourself, you will
learn a lot, but it may require more of your time and be more difficult than you expected. If you
take it to a shop, there will be a cash outlay that will likely be a fair amount greater than the
cost of a new imported jack.

Several times I feared I had ruined a vital part on my jack, or was about to do so, simply
because I was without knowledge and experience related to rebuilding a floor jack. It is my
hope that this Instruct able will enable others who wish to do so to rebuild a hydraulic jack with
confidence and without some of the near mishaps I experienced. I wish someone had published
this before I began to rebuild my jack. It would have saved me time and trouble.

6. RECOMMENDATIONS
Choosing the best floor jack for your home or garage can be a difficult task. There are many
different types, brands, and models all with different characteristics. Do you need a floor jack
that is light and portable, or one that is heavy duty and has a high lifting capacity. Do you need
a low profile jack, or one with a high lifting height? Steel or Aluminum? There are so many
questions that is can make you dizzy, but dont throw in the towel just yet because the
