Sewing Lab Safety Rules and Guidelines

Safety

1) NO HORSEPLAY DURING SEWING!

2) ALWAYS wear shoes to prevent injuries.
3) Keep fingers away from the path of the needle. Put them on the cloth on either
side.
4) If you have an accident, report it to the teacher first, even if it is minor.
5) One person at the ironing board. The iron should be turned off when not in use.
Remember to stand it on its heel and not flat on its sole when done.
6) Handle sharp equipment carefully.
a) When passing shears, pass with handle towards the person.
b) Keep blades of shears closed when not in use
c) Seam rippers on table or in totetray/bag/drawer, and needles/ pins in
pincushion.
7) Keep pins/needles out of mouth, use pincushions.
8) When threading the machine, keep foot off of the foot pedal.
9) If machine needle is bent, remove it and replace it.
10) Always concentrate on your own business. While talking to a friend you may sew
or cut something incorrectly, which may not be able to be corrected and might
affect your grade.
a) If you goof around/ horseplay, there is a good chance you will be handsewing
for the day.

Guidelines:

1) Before sewing, check machine. Look at settings and make sure presser foot is down.
If machine is not working in the first couple of stitches, stop and see if it is jammed
with thread.
2) Use the palm of your hand on the handwheel when starting.
3) Cut threads ends with small scissors as you go, place in a pile to make clean-up
easier.
4) For help take a number.
5) If machine is not working, write a note and put it onto the Parking Lot, so I can work
on it or get someone else to fix it.
6) Remember to put the presser foot down before you start to sew.
7) Hold both threads towards the back as you start to sew, this prevents jamming your
machine with thread.
8) If machine is not working properly, check your threading, RETHREAD and try again.
9) Take care of all equipment, it’s expensive to replace and that means you will have
to share and take turns at the machines.
10) Keep your tote tray orderly.
11) Before you leave, the room must be tidy/picked-up, that includes all equipment
put back, all thread picked up and chairs pushed in.
 I have read the attached safety rules and have been present when they were discussed in class or I

discussed them directly with my family and consumer science teacher.
