Ce383 Structural Analysis: Area 2500 MM E 60000 Mpa For All Members

This document contains 11 questions regarding the analysis of structures using the general stiffness method. Questions involve determining displacements, member forces, support reactions, and setting up and solving stiffness matrices for truss and frame structures with various loading and boundary conditions. Structures include trusses, frames, beams, and combinations of rigidly connected members. Materials and geometry, such as cross-sectional properties and lengths, are provided as needed to set up and solve the analysis.

CE383 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

FALL 2017

PROBLEM SET 5

Q1) Use General Stiffness Method to analyze the structure shown below for the loading
conditions indicated. Determine the displacements at dofs and the corresponding member
forces.

Area = 2500 mm2

E = 60000 MPa for all members

Q2) Consider the truss structure shown in which A and E are the same for all members

a) Determine the minimum number of dofs and construct the stiffness matrix
b) For the application of equal vertical (downward) loads of magnitude P at points b
and c, and calculate the resulting displacements at points b and c.
c) Calculate the support reactions.
Q3) Using General Stiffness Method, determine the joint displacements and member
forces for the truss system shown below. E=200 GPa, A= 450 mm2 for all members.

Q4) Analyze the structure using General Stiffness Method. Also draw shear & moment
diagrams. EI is constant.

Q5) Analyze the structure using General Stiffness Method. Also draw shear & moment
diagrams. Members are axially rigid.
E= 200 GPa, I= 420(106) mm4 for both members.
Q6) Using the General Stiffness Method,
a) Find the required cross-sectional area (in mm2) for the diagonal truss member which
has been added to the axially rigid L-shaped frame so that the lateral drift (i.e. sway)
is equal to 15 cm.
b) Find the force in the truss member for the given case.

Q7) The cantilever beam shown is connected to a bar at joint B by a pin. Compute all
reactions using General Stiffness Method. EI= 2.13×103 kN.m2 for beam and EA = 6×103
kN for beam and truss.

Q8) Use the General Stiffness Method to determine all support reactions. Use the
minimum degrees of freedom necessary. EI=2x104 kN.m2. The beam is axially rigid.

Q9) Given structure in the figure is composed of rigidly connected members AB, BC, DE,
EF, and EB that are axially rigid with constant EI. By using General Stiffness Method,
set up the structure stiffness matrix K and load vector Q, where unknown displacements
of the structure D will be obtained through solving K D = Q.

Q10) Determine the reactions and forces in each member of the truss shown below by
using General Stiffness Method.
Q11) For the given structures; determine the support reactions and the member end forces
by using the General Stiffness Method. Assume axial rigidity for these structures.
