politics. The current economic growth rate as per World Bank is 6% approx. But it
was estimated to be 7.29% by this year (approx.) there has been growth but in a
slow pace due to political unrest. Whatever the problem is, Bangladesh is
progressing through everything.
in 1960-70 the growth of the then Pakistan was really appreciable but GDP per
capita was low but after the liberation war, the Bangladeshi economy was crippled.
It took a span to time to again stand erect and finally we are trying to achieve the
millennium development growth now and in many sector we have achieved it too!
The revolution started in sept 2000 with a time frame of 15 years in with a main
goal to reduce extreme poverty nad it was adopted by 189 countries. There are 8
goals in total:
In case of Bangladesh poverty has been a vast issue as nearly 60% of the population
in 1990 used to live with the income of $1 a day but within 2008 it has declined to
37% (approx)
Under the health sector child mortality and maternal health matter the most. The
target of infant mortality under 5 years was 50 per 10000 but in 2006 the reality
was 65%. Furthermore, the immunization rate of children has rose to a certain level
for instance, is its 83% in 2006 whereas the target is 100% by 2015.
The maternal ration in Bangladesh was targeted to be 143 per 10000 but in 2009 it
was 290. HIV was not a big problem for Bangladesh from the beginning and number
of people affecting from tuberculosis had also reduced. Life expectancy has rose
overall.
Environment in Bangladesh has also been emphasized with various programs and
laws. For instance pollution permits, higher corporation tax and even less allocation
of permission to set up factories but curtailing natural resources. Deforestation and
other steps have been taken by the government where the target of rainforest
saving was supposed to be 20% by 2015 but the reality is 13.36% approx in 2012.
Even the Human Development Index has also been used to assess Bangladesh. It is
a development indicator that shows and represents a countries’ development in
terms of Primary education, Life Expectancy (69yrs currently which was 49 in the
90s) and GDP per Capita. Bangladesh has been doing well in a moderate pace.
