Our motherland Bangladesh had been in many turmoil and ups and downs but it is

still standing erect proudly. There were tremendous fluctuations in economics and
politics. The current economic growth rate as per World Bank is 6% approx. But it
was estimated to be 7.29% by this year (approx.) there has been growth but in a
slow pace due to political unrest. Whatever the problem is, Bangladesh is
progressing through everything.
in 1960-70 the growth of the then Pakistan was really appreciable but GDP per
capita was low but after the liberation war, the Bangladeshi economy was crippled.
It took a span to time to again stand erect and finally we are trying to achieve the
millennium development growth now and in many sector we have achieved it too!

The revolution started in sept 2000 with a time frame of 15 years in with a main
goal to reduce extreme poverty nad it was adopted by 189 countries. There are 8
goals in total:

 Eradication of extreme poverty and hunger

 Achieve universal primary education
 Promote gender equality and women empowerment
 Improve child mortality
 Improve maternal health
 Combat against malaria, Aids, Tuberculosis and other diseases
 Sustainable healthy environment
 Global partnership for development.

Bangladesh has done well in many sectors.

In case of Bangladesh poverty has been a vast issue as nearly 60% of the population
in 1990 used to live with the income of $1 a day but within 2008 it has declined to
37% (approx)

Now comes primary education, Bangladesh has established General Education

Project and Task force education project in order to improve the education system
and eventually it was good. The primary level education rose to a satisfactory level.
98% of the girls are attending primary schools. Adult literacy rate of 15years + rose
72%. There were more girls than boys in the education sector now a days. The ratio
of girls to boys in primary education is 1.03:1 in 2009. The target of set by the MDG
was 100% in the primary education and Bangladesh has achieved 94.9% in 2010
. Bangladesh has been quite successful in the education sector.

Then comes promoting gender equality and women empowerment. In the

constitution especially in the 15th amendment the number of women seats has been
increased and even in the local government there are reserved seats for women for
eg, ward shava. This indicates that the women empowerment is taking place in
Bangladesh. Women empowerment is not only giving power to women for any sake
but considering them equal to others. Bangladesh has got too many women leaders.
2 state ministers, the pm, the speaker, the opposition head, 1 vc, judges, secretary
and even UP members. There are many programs for women that Brac- the largest
NGO and many other organizations are offering like microcredit etc in order to
empower women to show their potentials. Education for women (primary) has also
been ensured. In secondary education the ratio of girls: boys are 1.17:1 in 2009
where the target was 1:1. Even the percentage of women in the parliament is 19.6
in 2011 where as the target is to have 33% of women in parliament.

Now comes the health sector in Bangladesh:

Under the health sector child mortality and maternal health matter the most. The
target of infant mortality under 5 years was 50 per 10000 but in 2006 the reality
was 65%. Furthermore, the immunization rate of children has rose to a certain level
for instance, is its 83% in 2006 whereas the target is 100% by 2015.

Now maternal health:

The maternal ration in Bangladesh was targeted to be 143 per 10000 but in 2009 it
was 290. HIV was not a big problem for Bangladesh from the beginning and number
of people affecting from tuberculosis had also reduced. Life expectancy has rose
overall.

Environment in Bangladesh has also been emphasized with various programs and
laws. For instance pollution permits, higher corporation tax and even less allocation
of permission to set up factories but curtailing natural resources. Deforestation and
other steps have been taken by the government where the target of rainforest
saving was supposed to be 20% by 2015 but the reality is 13.36% approx in 2012.
Even the Human Development Index has also been used to assess Bangladesh. It is
a development indicator that shows and represents a countries’ development in
terms of Primary education, Life Expectancy (69yrs currently which was 49 in the
90s) and GDP per Capita. Bangladesh has been doing well in a moderate pace.

However:

• Male domination

• Discrimination in work

• Maternal mortality rate

• Sexual harassment

• Child marriage
